What kind of HARDWARE solutions are there in the sub $1k price range that would allow bandwidth limiting on an internet connection?

I believe the Linux based Routers can do it. All you would need is an old computer for it. What kind of connection do you need to limit? What is this for?

If you are searching for this you might want to try "bandwidth shaping".

Devices to do this tend to be expensive but as mentioned it can be done with Linux.

It's for a 1.5 Mbit sDSL connection. I said hardware because the people who will be administering it aren't exactly "tech savy." I know setting up a linux box as a router will work, however they will have absolutely no idea how adminster it or fix it.

get cisco switch with netflow control card. Will limit your bandwidth to whatever you want it to be.

And they will know how to work with another system?

I think it would be easier learn how to administer a single piece of hardware than it would to administer a linux box. I've considered telling them to buy a Cisco switch and setting it up for them, but once I'm gone, who will know how to use the Cisco IOS?

Maybe set up a web interface and teach the admins how to change some settings for bandwidth limiting on the Cisco router?
Or set up auto command to do specific tasks with different accounts?

Window's servers have an option for users called "bandwidth throttling" and the same for their backoffice products. Linux does the samething.

Cisco routers can do it to a subnet.
