bandwidth useage of AIM

I'm just curious, how much bandwidth does AIM really use? The story is that on my brother's college campus no one can connect to AIM and supposedly it's not blocked. I'm guessing they blocked port 5190 or they have it setup to have an extremely low priority not allowing anyone to connect.

Is there is quick and easy way to see if 5190 is blocked? The campus is very short on bandwidth and they have tried many stupid things to attempt to not spend $$ on the bandwidth that they actually need.

moving files it can be a huge burden. Chatting is next to nothing.

And what the uni is doing is NOT stupid. It's called using resources wisely for the purpose of education. Bandwidth isn't free and neither is money.

Frickin' entitlement mentality really ticks me off.

Get off your pulpit, I wasn't complaining in this thread but I will now. My friend is in the middle of the desert in Iraq and he has aim. This is a private school that is not cheap and aim is a means of communication.

Is there an easy way to see if the port is blocked?

Try telnetting to the aim servers on that port.

I don't think it's entitlement mentality, most of the time. My wife also attended a private school that was NOT cheap at all. But the internet bandwidth they had made me laugh. Instead of paying more for what the students NEEDED (They did need more bandwidth than they had), they would rather bring in speakers every single week that would cost around 50-100k. They ended up taking a poll of the students during my wife's senior year to see what their opinion was, the speakers were most of the time horrible and everyone felt that the school was not making appropriate purchases for what was REALLY needed. But just another thing where funds are mis-managed. This may or may not be the case with amdskip's example.

who runs the school, cause u kno if they spend money on bandwidth thats less in their pockets.
