Banished - an upcoming city building strategy game

Saw this over on RPS http://www.shiningrocksoftware.com/

The guy making it is a lone developer from the console world. The game sounds like an interesting mix of city building and resource management where you guide your villagers to grow and expand through trade, hunting, gathering. There's no money in this game or tech tree, as long as you have the resources you can build anything.

Something I'll keep on my radar for sure.

Because in a corporation, the people deciding on how a game should be done are most often business majors without a gaming background (if they game at all).

I'm not surprised at all alot of these small devs makes such great games (FTL, SPAZ, Terraria, etc).

After watching a 5 minute youtube video of this game, I'm already more interested in it than I ever was in SimCity5.

EDIT: Looks like over a year, plus about 8 months building the engine that allowed him to rapidly prototype his game.

I read some of his 'blogs', he built the engine from scratch using C++; He said he spends 8 hours a day testing the game and is never able to fill the map.

I love how into his own game he is: "I know PC’s have gigabytes of memory now, but I come from game console programming where memory is precious. I saved about 25 megabytes with of memory with the format and size changes, while increasing the quality of ambient occlusion maps! Hoorah!"

And I love this little tidbit that I was too naive to believe:
"So, here’s a secret. When making screenshots, a lot of developers will pause the action, increase resolution, move the camera to the best location, and then color correct the images. It makes them look as good as possible as shows of the tech really well."

I always wondered why games looked so hot in previews. LOL

He should start a kickstarter, maybe hire people to help him develop it faster if needed.
