Banking question

I deposited my work check Wednesday.

While depositing, the lady asked me a question about one of the numbers in my account, saying "Is that a 9?"

Since I only have one 9 in my account number I said yes, she gave me my deposit receipt, end transaction.

I logged into my online banking five minutes and show a negative balance in my checking account, with no deposit on Wednesday.

What I'm guessing is that she was asking about a 7 that I have in my account, that I didn't even think about when she posed the question.

So, my check was deposited to the wrong account and now I have a negative balance.

Cliffs: deposited check, misunderstanding between me and teller about account number, check deposited to wrong account, my checking account in the red now

I shan't be charged for this and I will get my money back, correct?

Edit: Went to the bank earlier today and somehow the money miraculously showed up and the teller's reasoning was "because they shut down I-80 all of our deposits didn't work".

I think its a line of BS instead of saying "Hey, the teller didn't put it in the right account" but I got my money and no overdraft fees.

You better call your bank to explain the situation because they'll no doubt charge you an overdraft fee. Banks love charging fees. The bastards

EDIT: Did you get a deposit receipt?

She asked if it was a nine. It wasn't. You said it was. That's not a misunderstanding, that's a screw up (on your end).

What bank do you have anyway. I usually just slide my card, hand the check/cash and the teller does the rest.

As I said, I found out just a little bit ago and the main offices are closed so I can't explain the situation until Monday morning.

I had a deposit receipt but of course, I can't find that now. It might be in my car but I'm pretty sure I brought it in the house.

No, the teller is responsible for making sure the account number is correct.

Direct deposit for the win.

It's alright, we'll see how it turns out in the end.

I have a 9 in my account. She didn't clarify which number she was looking at. I'm not blaming her, but I don't think it's my fault either.

She also didnt' check the account name when she pulled it up. I just talked to my sister who is a branch manager of a bank in Kansas City, and she said it's all their fault. They screwed up a bunch of things that they were supposed to do.

I had something similar happen.

My mom wrote me a thousand dollar check using my nickname. I didn't think anything of it at the time. The bank even accepted it and i saw the funds in my account. I needed the money for my move to Alaska just in case. Well apparently there was a review when the bank processed the check, and since the name didn't match, the bank withdrew the funds from my account, and I just wrote a check for rent.

So my mom went to my bank and redeposited another thousand dollars. Well the bank never redeposited the original thousand back into my Mom's account. It was quite the nightmare to fix....my mom thinking i tried to get another 1000 bucks...etc etc. After numerous phone calls to her bank and my bank, her bank discovered that a clerk processing checks made an error on their part. Sadly...they didn't offer her or I for any of the misunderstandings their little error caused between my mom and I.

Edit: To add to this...apparently the money just floated around in limbo for the two weeks it took them to discover the error.

I have a 9 in my account too. I"ll check to see if she deposited your money in my account.

Just checked. I don't have it.

This is why when I deposit a check, I always check the deposit slip before walking out.

I'm surprised this even happened. Most tellers will bring up the account number and be able to see the name the account is under. They then match the name up with the name you entered on your deposit slip just to double check. Careless bank?

Can't really expect them to notice $1k though. It might be a lot to an individual/family, but well, on the grand scheme, sometimes it barely registers.

I remember during an audit when we overlooked a 40k difference in a a management company's payroll books and bankstatements because in the end, it was less then 2% then the total amount.

It's a local bank.

I have no worries. I'm expecting to get my money back with no overdraft charges. Anything less and then I'll get pissed off.
