IIRC some of the older chips (pre-San Diego and Toledo) would run the memory at lower speeds when 4 sticks were installed, something to do with the onboard memory controller. I had a 4800+ I ran for quite a while up until last April, and had no issues with 4 sticks of RAM.

why is AMD blaming Intel as always when they are having problems on their execution? Like this one

good ole hector has definitely made his share of mistakes in the past 24 mos, but it does have to be tough worrying about intel taking your info and using their manufacturing might to one-up you before you get to market with your "great idea". Now, if AMD had great execution they could still maintain advantages for short periods of time, but imho intel is unlikely to go back to sleep any time soon.

Well, not only does the cpu have to support 4 dual-sided sticks @ 200 Mhz, but the motherboard, and more importantly, it's BIOS had to support it. In other words, any motherboard wouldn't support it, if it's BIOS weren't new enough. There were quite a few people complaining about that, right after the Venices and Toledo's came out, IIRC.
