The company pushed to the top of the e-reader race for Q1, edging out Amazon's industry-defining Kindle. The bookseller's lead came thanks to its multiple devices, including the recently introduced touchscreen Nook and the tablet-esque Nook Color. The research firm [IDC] credits the latter with Barnes & Noble's surge in the standings, explaining that the Kindle's colorless state has negatively impacted sales.

Now its Amazon's turn to release a tablet device...

Not a shocker at all, people like color displays. BGR has a really good article on the Amazon tablet being a bigger threat to google than Apple, interesting read. More or less they are ging to out google google by using their OS to sell Amazon media and search via bing giving google basically no revenue from the work to make the OS.

The question is what are their ebook sales like? My wife is an author and her books on Amazon outsell her books Barnes and Noble by about 40 to 1. Small sample of course, but still quite a difference.

an amazon tablet isnt that exciting, it supposedly will be really cut down like the nook. im just hoping amazon comes up with a new wireless model (isnt 3g already free on b&w kindle?), and other manufacturers with better hardware will follow

I bought my Kindle because it wasn't a general tablet, it is a dedicated e-reader, and I like that it doesn't have a color LCD to give me eye strain over long usage periods or lower battery life. Plus it's much cheaper than any tablet.

It isn't really an apples to apples comparison. When there's another e-ink e-reader out there that's as light, thin, and long lasting (battery) as the Kindle I will definitely consider switching, but the Nook Color is not at all what I want as an avid book reader. I already have a smartphone to take care of anything a tablet could do.

When it comes to reading e-books, I would much rather read on the kindle's e-ink screen than an LCD. It is much easier for me to read, and also easier on my eyes.

My question is... how do they know? Amazon doesn't release it's sales #s for Kindle. So, if they are the primary retailer, how are they getting numbers?

Yea I think they're just estimates.

Anyway, I believe B&N has released both the Nook Color as well as the new e-Ink Nook since the Kindle 3 came out. Makes sense that they'd have a jump in market share - but I've also heard that Amazon is due to release both a new Kindle reader, as well as Amazon tablets, later this year...which I imagine will change things. I'm planning on getting Kindle 4 when it comes out...I've had my Kindle 2 for about 2.5 years and I still love it, but seeing the much sharper screen on my girlfriend's Kindle 3 is making me jealous...ugh, and the Kindle 3 is so cheap right now! Must....resist....wait...for....new......model!

I have the nook color, and I'm glad I picked it over the kindle. No problems for me reading on a lcd screen, and I got more than what I paid for after flashing CM7 on it. I'm also pleased to see that B&N aren't trying to prevent people from hacking their device, as opposed to a certain company with a fruit logo.

Makes sense and it's good for the market. Both are trading blows and there's no huge market leader in terms of hardware. They're both constantly trying to one up each other in different ways which is exactly how competition should be. IMO the other players like Sony and such in the ereader market weren't even close to challenging Amazon. If B&N didn't jump in I don't think the prices would have dropped as quickly on the tech nor would it advance this fast.

They should go dual route - one to compete with the nook the other to compete with the iPad. I have a feeling they will since they have their own app market.

It's good to see Barnes & Noble's investments with the Nook line pay off AND drive innovation at the same time. If you had asked me two years ago who was doing better between the big American chain bookstores, I would've picked Borders all the way...and been dead wrong.

I'm surprised at how much I use my rooted Nook Color as an e-reader, something I didn't initially intend to use it for at all. It's a very handy little device.

If it supports the Amazon market (pretty much a given), it'll do pretty well.

Oh I don't doubt that. However there are some apps that are only available via the Android Market, not to mention the core google apps themselves. I'm not going to buy a tablet that I can't get those on.

If the Amazon tablet had a camera (it doesnt) it would definitely be a win. I saw it on FOX this morning and it looks pretty good.

I wouldn't be so sure. Amazon has been grooming their own Android ecosystem for some time now. I wouldn't really be surprised if they released something that was stripped of the Android Market, Google Music, etc...and just had the Amazon equivalents of everything preinstalled.

If you read the internet a lot on your phone, the upgrade to a 7 inch screen really makes your eyes feel better after extended use.

Now available for $200!

With apps for news, sports, weather, traffic, movie times & more, and things like tapatalk I find I almost never actually need the regular browser anymore. In fact I don't even remember the last time I used it (I believe it auto-opened for a twitter pic).
