He was amazing.

It's scary to think what the Packers might have had if they drafted him instead of Tony Mandarich.

Yes, I loved watching him play. He was poetry in motion. The only other NFL players I've seen juke like him are Sayers and LT.

Seeing number 20 in blue and silver takes me back to when I was a kid...didn't know what we had til we lost him (I didn't really appreciate football yet).

It's depressing that he quit early, instead of Barry holding all the records that loser Emmit does... Argh!

If he had played longer and had any sort of offensive line there's little doubt in my mind he'd have done some incredible things in his career.

Reminds me of Jim Brown and his shortened career..

LT's career will be better. That may or not be b/c Barry was with the Lions. Sure it has some to do with it. I honestly think LT will be a better back.

agreed. A case can be made for Peyton, Sanders, and E. Smith but Jim Brown is hands down the best. IMHO of course.

No way, Gayle Sayers was the best of all time. Jim Brown a close second because he did not have near as good "change of direction".

Sayers' stats aren't anywhere near any of the greats of all time. At best he's put up above average numbers in his career.

Wow you took the words right out of my mouth, except I never saw Sayers play. LT is like Sanders with more power, scary, eh? Anyway, Barry Sanders is the best RB I ever saw -- he's the only player for which I could honestly say I didn't mind if he ripped-off an 80 yarder against my team (Giants or Jets). I think that at least on artificial turf, there's no dispute as to him being the best.

Stats aren't everything. Consdier Barry Sanders, in fact -- had he had a good team (e.g. some semblance of a QB), can you imagine what his stats would have been like? OMG!

The only problem with Sanders was(partially attributed to the o-line) that every few plays he would lose 3-5 yards trying to beat people in the backfield. A good back is dependable. Faking out the LB is what you want to do, but I prefer the backs that can do it without having to retreat several yards first. A quick cut & your gone.

It's impossible to pick a best of all time. Different people behind different lines in different offensive schemes against different defenses. The one thing you can say for sure is that Gale Sayers was Barry Sanders before Barry Sanders was even born.

His career was 68 freaking games due to knee injuries. If you ever saw his game films you'd have no doubts about his standing among the all-time greats.

Remember that the Lions were a bad team back then and that everybody was expecting him and he still shook them routinely. He's the only back like that I've ever seen in the NFL.

Yeah, he retreated to the backfield a lot, but that wasn't to lose one guy, that was when the blocking had completely broken down. Every other back would have just lunged forward for 1 yard or run out of bounds.

Sanders claims the 'Best Running Back' hands down. LT is steadily going to close the gap if he stays injury free in my book though.
