I'm assuming you're using the logic that the human eye cannot see more than 30 frames per second. That's true, however... CRT's don't refresh the screen all at once... they scan from top to bottom, left to right... that's where the flicker comes from at low refresh rates. If the whole screen was refreshing, like an LCD, that can change the whole screen at once, and doesn't "scan"... and also only changes the pixels that need to be changed, then you probably would not notice it very much. But the vast majority of computers users still use CRT's. I'll bet my life that I can tell you the difference between 30 fps and 85 fps.

I don't know the biology behind it (even though I took an entire semester course on perception haha) but it's the movement in the game that looks "smoother" with above 30fps. 30-50fps look extremely choppy and sluggish to me, I play a lot of Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat and am used to the engine rendering 99fps constantly the entire game, so when it slows down 50%, you really notice the hit. I think the biggest reason for pushing hardware now is to prepare for the onslaught of Doom 3 + Half-Life 2 hehe.

I am actually facing the same choice as others in this thread

1) Asus A7N8X-Deluxe
AMD Athlon 2500+ Barton
512meg Corsair "TwinX" Low Latency PC3200

2) Asus P4P800-UAY (Non-Deluxe)
Intel P4 2.4 "C"
512meg Corsair "TwinX" Low Latency PC3200

Here in Canada, it's about $100CDN more for combo 2 (the mainboards are the same price, the Intel CPU is $100 more since it's the stupid retail version, I'm hoping OEM parts become available ASAP since I will be using a Thermalright SLK-800/900). I figure it's a pretty safe bet to get at least 3.0ghz (250Mhz FSB 200MHz RAM) with this setup on the P4, and probably ~2200 on the AMD (I'm going to be using Panaflo L1A's in the setup, so not enough airflow to really push the Athlon) and lots of people have been reporting 3.2-3.5GHz with the P4 on air cooling. Still not 100% convinced, lingering a bit waiting for more P4P800 reviews, not even considering the P4C800-Deluxe as it's another $100 CAD ontop of the P4P800.

Then you're in the wrong forum brudda Others addressed the frame rate aspect of things so I'll add this. I and many others are involved with DC projects and you can never have enough speed for those, another place where overclocking is highly beneficial is media encoding. There are many other tasks that benefit from more speed as well so now you can see that overclocking isn't just a hobby or about bragging rights, it's about increasing efficency and reducing task times.

The OEM P4C's are available already.
