I have put together about 10 of these combo's from Fry's with these motherboards, and have had almost zero problems. The only problem that I cannot figure out is with the onboard NIC and Cisco switches. For some reason with the Cisco switch, the onboard NIC will just decide not to be connected and nothing I do can get it connected again. They act like there is no physical connection. It only happens with my Cisco 2950 switches. Any other switch, it has no problem at all. These boards are plenty fast and stable. I will continue to buy them.

dont see it

There was no fry's ad today so you don't see it. If you clicked it when he linked you would have been there. Not sure if they (LA Times) have archives built into that site.

*edit* Regarding ECS quality: I thought everyone had a general consensus that the first few revisions of the board are the ones that are real trash, giving people all sorts of problems. I've bought 3 late revisions of the board and have had close to 0 problems, but I'm not gonna say it's user error, I think it's more likely that it's either: old revision board problems, or just the (bad) luck of the draw.

Hey s0ssos

Do you have SP1 installed for XP. That may be why your Back USB 2.0 ports don't work. Before SP1, XP did not support USB 2.0. Just a thought!

I don't know how Fry's can sell this as a combo, since that assumes the MB and processor are compatible.

Bartons run at 166 FSB and the K7VTA3 will only run at 166 MHz if the PCI is out of spec at 42 MHz. This MB only has a /4 divisor as far as I can tell, so unless I'm missing something it cannot run a Barton according to specifications without overclocking all your peripherals 26%.

Beyond that it is solid as a rock when you use good DDR. (I tried it with my $7 KByte/SpecTek PC2100 and it won't pass Memtest86 and crashes XP even at 133 MHz.)

I repeat, use decent RAM.

No, it doesn't need PC2700. The processor will run at 133 MHz or 100 MHz, or even slower, in which case you can use slower RAM. But that's not my point.

The K7VTA3 does not support the Barton at 166 (333) MHz. That is my point.

According to the latest version of SiSoftware Sandra (standard version 2004.10.9.89), the PCI bus is at 33Mhz with a 1/5 divider with the CPU running at 166Mhz FSB. You will have to set JP3 and JP5 to the 166Mhz postion and also may need to update the BIOS to version 5.0g if it's a revision 5 board.

Currently running at 185 Mhz FSB (37Mhz PCI) = 2.13Ghz with $10 Cooler Master X-Dream cooler at 2750 rpm.

Pretty good combo overall.

I guess no one read it when I said I bought it. But I can't tell you how it ran because I returned it before I used it. (I realized i didnt have enough money to build the rest of the system.)

In Phoenix, I got the ECS K7VTA3 with a Via KT333 chipset which does support the 333 bus.
It will make a nice backup board.
Oh, I got a great 2600+ Barton too..

Agreed - yeah older revision boards and just bad luck (Fry's repackaging). But yeah, I assume that the new Pro boards of the S5A are solid since this has been so widely used and tested.

ECS and PCchips, are in the same league, why do you think you are paying like $20.00 for the motherboard????

You get what you pay for.

Some stores are stocking the rev 8 of the board which uses the KT333CF chipset (basically a KT400 without 400FSB/mem support). Faster memory controller, smaller PCB footprint but only 2DIMM slots instead of 3.

Good thing that Fry's has these motherboard combos all the time, I'm just waiting for a good DDR deal to come along first.

do you guys think that fry's are flushing these out because they know that intel are slashing their prices in a few weeks and that amd are planning to the same?

Ahh.. No. Fry's endlessly does this. This always some combo onsale cheap. This is what they seem to do. They sell you a CPU and give you a MB for free. If you look at the price of the combo, it's always about the same price as they sell the CPU for alone. The $1800 plus combo was $59. They sell the $1800 alone for $54. The 2600+ combo was $109. They sell that CPU for $104.

I was in the Palo Alto store a couple of nights ago. They had just gotten in a fresh shipment of MBs. They just slashed open the shipping cartons and left them on the floor. It was kind of impressive seeing a whole pallet of MBs just sitting there.

yup, fries has had cheep combos every week for like 4EVAR. the 1800+ was $59, price break down on the receipt was something like 27.99 for the mobo and 32.00 for the cpu

commission-wise for the salesperson, they make 50 cents for every combo they sell (because they dont really need to "sell" them, already too cheep) they need to get the person to buy like a 2.4C retail for $250 along w/ a $150 intel mobo. that's why they push you for other stuff besides the main combos (or other hardware parts, performance guarantees, etc...)

the store itself is probably making chicken scratch on these combos, if any $$$ at all. some specials they have on their weekly ads they sell at a loss. its stuff like these combos they use to lure the buyer in, because cpu+mobo is not all it takes for someone to build a comp (still need hd, vid, ram, case, etc...)

of course their only flaw is how AT - HD works and how we buy everything from everywhere at the cheapest price
