One other question, please.

I have the choice of either using the stock heat sink and fan or using a SVC GC-68 heat sink and fan. Any opinions?

Thanks.

It's really a toss up on this. I'm not sure what would work better. The GC68 is a great cheap little heatsink that performs great but I'm not sure if it's on par with the retail heatsink or if it may be a little better really.

I scored the $83 and $63 AN35n combo, quite happy I didn't wait.

Runs 52deg or so @2GHz, I think the default voltage is 1.825v in bios... might try under volting it a bit and see if it runs cooler. Tried running @ 175+FSB but my PC2700DDR is not capable... memtest shows errors > 175, I can lower timings but the memory bandwidth drops anyway. I think I'm at 7 3 3 2.5 in the Shuttle AN35N board right now. I'm pretty sure I could go to 2.1+GHz but don't want to mess w/ it yet--I need some more ventilation in my case.

Honestly can't tell a difference between it and my XP2100+ running at 144MHz FSB and ~1800MHz. Haven't run any benchmarks... I'm sure it is faster... just not noticeably so.

Don't forget to put thermal paste on this ..... I made the mistake when Ihad my first Duron system and the burned out in like 9 secs -- to fast to hit the power button! I thought the surface area on the GC-68 was enough but I guess it doesn't sit as close and the small retain HSF does and it left a nice burn mark on the bottom of the aluminum HSF.

Speaking of thermal paste, if I go with the stock HSF, should I use the thermal pad or remove it and go with AS3?

I used goof-off to remove the thermal pad on the stock fan (and clean off any residue) and used arctic silver 3. The Barton I got has a copper disc in the middle with a ridge around it. Made for a good platform to smooth out the AS3...

once I get better ventilation in my case it should run pretty cool I think.
