Thanks.

The short answer is unless your RAM can run at 333FSB No it won't.

The long answer:
I am going to use mine with PC2100 but, I am going to run them at 133fsb (the Tiger MP will only run at 100 or 133FSB). normally that would mean that the barton would run at 1.47Ghz instead of 1.83. However if you can up the multiplier to 13X then you can get the rated speed at 133FSB. I am going to see If I can get MP 2800+ speeds at stock voltage using 15 or 16 * 133, that will get me the same performance as the a $287.00 MP 2800+ 512K Barton Core that runs on a 266FSB @ 2.08Ghz.

There are 3 ways to change the multiplier you can mod the cpu or the pins or socket. The third way is to use an Upgradeware XP-TMC (AMD Athlon XP/MP Total Multiplier Controller). The XP TMC allows you to use dip switches to mod the multiplier instead of modding the chip itself. I got a couple for $29.95 each at strattoncomputer.com. Here is a review at Tom's Hardware. according to Tom's you don't need these since you can just mod the CPU's and iin conclusion it is a wasted expense. I disagree, I have fried two $56.00 XP 1800's by blowing and painting bridges, so I think $60 to not have to mod the CPU's is cheap insurance.

I am hoping I can hit 2800 speeds on my Tiger MP at stock voltage, looks like I might be able to do it... according to the User reviews at newegg Allot of people are getting XP 3200 speeds out of these at stock voltage.

Your ram does not have to equal the FSB in order for something to "Work" if a board can run a 166FSB it is likely capable of running this processor without changing multipliers.

FWIW nForce2 boards unlock the CPU multiplier, allowing you to change it in the BIOS. A lot better than the ways gwuasg mentioned.

Anyone have a recommendation for a mobo for this chip? I'm looking at either the Asus A7N8X Deluxe or the Abit NF7-S. I'm leaning towards the Asus though. I've always used them and never had a problem.

epox 8rga+, or if u dont need the onboard video, get the 8rda+..they are stable, and easily overclockable, just look at the reviews at newegg, im using the 8rga+ myself

I second that recommendation, another satisfied 8rga+ user here

before I actually buying this CPU, I would like to know which motherboard I should get in order to overclock this CPU all the way to 3200 ,since the reviews in newegg saying that people were able to overclocked it to 3200 with 3200 ddr memory. Other than motherboard, I was wondering is 300watts power supply in my case enough for this CPU? Thanks

300 watts is not good for this much power and assuming you have a relatively recent video card too. I would go to 400 for a non-generic supply such as Antec or look around if you want something superquiet (and more expensive).

For you guys who are overclocking to 3200 speeds, is this retail heatsync & fan adequate?

Hmm..been planning to buy the OEM version for sometime. Here's hoping I can get a nice overclock on my Asus A7V8X-X 2800+ levels would rock at $90!

300 watts is sufficient even if he has a Radeon 9800Pro and 4 drives.

They have closed the price gap between the retail and OEM versions. They are both now $90.

I didn't mention any ways, I just said you could use a 2500 w PC2100 ram.

yeah, this blows. I was looking forward to getting an $83 barton and a $63 dollar Shuttle AN35N nf2 board, but newegg jacked the prices up since 7:30am today.

Now it's $90 and $75, that's $19 higher then just a couple hours ago.

I ran into a need for another processor, so I went ahead and got in, but I had to pay $90. That is for a retail CPU though, so I think that's a pretty good deal. I'd say the heatsink and fan would cost like $10 anyway, so I'm happy.

exactly. i run my barton at it's default with pc2100 ram and it runs perfectly fine.

Don't worry, it will come back down next week.

Newegg always raises their prices on the weekends. I see it done all the time with the 1700+.

I run 6 HDDs, a DVD burner, a CDRW, a Radeon 9700 Pro, and all the other little goodies on a 350W Antec PSU, no problems .

While I'm waiting for my retail cpu to arrive, I was wondering if anyone is using the stock heat sink and fan from the retail package? If so, does it come with a thermal pad? Are you removing the pad or using it? How are your temps?

Thanks.

I just got this one a couple weeks ago($90). Newegg is playing wild price games, there is no way supply flucuates by as much as $10-$13 almost daily. One day it might be $83, the next it could be $92. The corsair memory I got at $112 each, a week ago it was down to $104, now it shot back up to like $114 or something.

Anyway, I am using the retail hsf. It comes with a thermal pad, yes. I am using it. My heatsink is copper too! My temps are running at 46-49 idle or so, as reported by BIOS. ASUS probe seems to be stuck on 47, I dont' really trust that. I overclocked it to about 2.0ghz yesterday and saw a bit of an increase, up to around 55. Mine seems to be running fairly hot, i have heard others who are running at like 35-40 idle, can't break 45 on a full load. I have good airflow, 1 awesome fan blowing in, 3 decent others blowing out(2 on back, 1 on side).

Hope this helps! Enjoy the cpu, this is one of the best bang for the buck Athlons that have came along in awhile, and it is a great overclocker with the right board.

So at what price is this a good deal, and at what price does it become not so good of a deal? I mean 4 or 5 dollars should not kill this deal right?

Can any of you guys with stepping knowledge please comment on these codes.

Thanks.
