Counsell didn’t want the game to get away, they were facing a strong Dodgers starter and couldn’t afford a big deficit. The strategy worked as Hader kept them a run behind. Hader’s pitch count was low, I would have left him in for potentially a few more outs. As it turned out, the Dodgers tacked on runs in the 6th.How can you take your starter out in the 3rd?

Yea, one manager was asked about how to deal with him, his reply was "get some runs before he comes on". Meanwhile the 2nd team to troll the Red Sox is now sitting at home, Astros star 3rd baseman Alex Bergman, (after they won game 1 of the ALCS), posted a vid on Instagram titled "a little video work". This was a clip of Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi giving up back to back to back HR's in May when he was with Tampa, having a very rough outing. Eovaldi got the last laugh however, in the game 5 clincher he came on and relief, here is is fanning Bergman on a ONE HUNDRED AND TWO MPH fastball!,That Hader is filthy, I can see why he went to him. But that’s the thing with the reliver strategy it seems like the probability of always getting a shut down guy next isn’t in your favor.
I agree should of left him in a little longer or at least till he got in trouble.
I haven’t watched an entire game since the 1994 strike when they cancelled the World Series. I’ll watch bits and pieces of games now and then, especially the WS, but only little snippets.
Well, I have to admit that watching playoff MLB can take just too much time, since each at bat is so important players endlessly drag them out by constantly stepping out of the box, a timer should be added to prevent this, it's a turn off to many. As for me, I appreciate the battle, but if MLB wants more fans watching changes to speed up play should be implemented. During the Yankees/Red Sox series Sox pitcher Brandon Fraiser was clearly annoyed with Yankee catcher Mark Sanchez stepping out of the box multiple times, he screamed at him "get in the F-ing box!" LOL, Sanchez finally complied and Fraizer blew a 98MPH fastball right past him.I honestly can't understand how anyone can watch baseball. The only thing that seems to make sense is that it appeals to people who use it as a background noise while they're nose-down in their phones. Scroll-scroll-scroll-scroll pick your head up for 2 seconds when a ball is put in play, then scroll-scroll-scroll for another 10 minutes until the next ball is put in play.

The Brewers strategy is the difference between playoff and regular season baseball. During the regular season a balanced rotation with a relatively weak 1-2 starters and better 3-4-5 starters and a good bullpen works well. Over the last 10 years what we see is that gets creamed in the post season where ace 1-2 starters will dominate a short series where they can pitch 4 of the 5 or even 5 of 7 games. Whichever team has the best two starters has a HUGE advantage. The Brewers didn't have that luxury, their rotation was okay and the bullpen was great, but they don't have that Verlander / Bumgarner / Kershaw top of the rotation guy that they could trust in a big do-or-die game. So they tried something a little off the wall that would probably fail, but going with their usual rotation was almost certain to fail. Those 5 and 7 game series are a completely different animals than what they play the other 162 games.
Early 2000s. Some players have said they actually have eye discomfort up to a day afterward, making it difficult to practice.Ok....when did they start having to wear the big ol'' ski googles when celebrating? Does having beer sprayed in your face hurt that bad?

That actually makes a lot of sense especially if you got a series to go stillEarly 2000s. Some players have said they actually have eye discomfort up to a day afterward, making it difficult to practice.
I would imagine champagne in the eyes would be awful given how acidic it is.

You sound just like my neighbor. Though I think deep down he just uses the strike as an excuse cause he’s a Mets fan.
This was for a championship, the AL or NL pennant. Better than the celebrations for making the playoffs. Here's an idea then. If you've still got a series to go you have not won shit yet, save the champagne for winning a championship
I saw a recent article where several players said the game is never slow when you are playing it.The strategy in baseball is pretty good, except the game takes too damn long to finish. Get rid of between-innings baseball tossing and get right to it. I have absolutely no idea how fans can sit through an entire game.
More baseball rant... these guys stand around the majority of the time but do play a lot of games, over a very long period of time. Why are X and Y players always on the g'damn DL? Grown men playing a game that hardly takes a physical toll (except for pitchers and catchers).

Hardly any physical toll??!??!?!?
162 games in what 30 different cities, climates from 0 to 100+. Pitchers throwing 103 MPH, hitters blasting them out at 130 MPH 450' away....
Sliding headfirst into an armored up catcher. Hitting the out field wall as you sprint and leap to catch a ball.
It would be great if someone could invent self-adjusting batting gloves, too many batters need to step out and adjust gloves every pitch.

You realize I actually watched baseball for over a decade... you are citing extreme AND rare cases. It seems so many end up on the DL for what they actually do on the field. Look at football and hockey. Even soccer has more physical contact. It's like these baseball guys are looking for time off from their long season so they can pop more sunflower seeds on the bench or in the bullpen. They probably work really hard in the weight room... but that's not exactly the reason they earn their paycheck... when it counts.
Isn't it true the batters actually step out to play the count? Think of what potential pitches are coming up next? It's also become a habit to step out... an annoying one from a fan's perspective.
I have no doubt it's fun to play - I played with friends as a kid and loved it as long as it kept moving, even while standing on the field. But spectating is another animal. You're not standing out there ready in case the ball is hit to you or you have to think where to cover if it's not. All you're doing is watching others stand around and when someone finally makes contact, you're hoping it's not just another foul ball. Then there's the commercials and all the waiting in between actual play. Thank God my kids never took to baseball (and for good reason) or I'd be one of those parents wishing the game moved just a bit faster so they can finally go home. But hey, good tanning time.
