I need to get a baseball/softball glove to use all-around just for fun, and don't want anything expensive. I'm not familiar with the types of gloves, so which should I get?

I'd just go into a Sports Authority and try a few on. Look for outfield gloves as they will be the most versatile and easy to use. Figure on spending about $50 to get a decent glove that won't fall apart after using it a few times.

Are there any particular brands to look for, or does it not really matter?

Personally I'm a fan of Mizuno, but get one that feels good to you

I personally like Rawlings gloves. If you're planning on playing softball with it, try to get a glove at least 12.5 inches (13" is a safe bet too). 12" is a tad too small for softball, unless you've grown up playing infield at 2B or SS and like smaller gloves in general. 14" might be too big for baseball; the ball will get lost in the webbing and make it harder for a quick transition between glove and hand.

Here's my glove:

Rawlings makes good gloves as does Mizuno.
I used a Rawlings in college and the minor's (played P, SS, 3B).
My brother used a Mizuno in college (pitcher).

If you are going to use a baseball (not softball) glove, get an outfielders glove that is the maximum 12" long.

Rawlings came out with a "Sandlot" glove this year which is really nice if you just want to play casually. The leather is softer than most other gloves at the price point and it breaks in really easily. It also has a nice broke-in look. Should be able to find it for around $70.

My favorite glove I ever had was a store brand (MTA Pro) first basemens glove. I still have it but the strap that holds your pinky and "ring" fingers broke, and I can't find anyone to fix it.

I think my catcher's mitt was also MTA Pro... I don't have it anymore. (Spent last 4 years of my baseball "career" alternating between First Base and Catcher)

I have several other fielder's gloves (Wilson, Rawlings, McGregor) all are good.. and I just picked them by how they felt in the store.

Odd, I was thinking of posting something similar to this today . So would a 12 1/2" glove be fine for a guy like me with big hands (I'm almost 6'5") who wants to mix it up between softball and baseball?

Probably, going too big would mean trouble getting the ball out of the glove. I got a 12.5" glove for myself just to play catch and baseball with. BTW, I'm 5'10" with normal sized hands.

I actually own a softball glove and a baseball glove. The baseball glove is a 12" Wilson and pretty ancient (dates back to junior high years). I bought a 14" Mizuno two years ago for softball specifically. I play outfield and first base so I really needed a bigger glove for softball. The Wilson (paid around $50 a long time ago) has stood up to time well and is in great shape (no cracks in the leather and has that nice, soft worn in feeling) but I rarely use it these days, other than as a spare glove for throwing the ball around. The Mizuno is a nice glove as well (paid around $75) but it probably needs to get more use than I give it to really get that comfortable feeling that the Wilson has. I actually treated the Wilson years ago with neatsfoot oil and then slept on it (under my pillow) for a week or two. I didn't do anything special to the Mizuno other than put a softball in it and wrap a few rubber bands tightly around it, but it was a nice soft leather to begin with.

EDIT: As for glove size, if you're a big guy, you might want to go with 12.5-13" glove if you're using it for both softball and baseball. I'm an average sized guy (5'10)and I find the 12" glove to be a little bit too small for softball. Then again, as I said, I play 1st base & OF where you would probably use a bigger glove.
