Yes I'm running NC stock because it did text resizing, reformatting etc better than anything else I tried (which included Aldiko). It's also dog slow and makes the entire Android experience awful, so I went back to stock. I'm sure the tablet is better, but the original Nook Color made for a terrible tablet. I don't know how anybody used it as one for long.
Ah. I was under the impression that the NC did pretty well -all things considered- running CM7. (Dunno personally, I've never actually used an NC with a ROM).

The NT has to be much better because mine works very well just rooted. (Even better with CM7 and even CM9 but I haven't bothered with mine since it does all I need it for currently- reading, a few games, movies, etc.)

Everyone has a different tolerance of "good enough" so stories will vary. It was good at the time, especially for the $200 price point. However I found it clunky enough to not want to use it for much other than reading (my phone was better at everything else)... so I went back to stock which IMO is better for a pure reader. Having said THAT though, I will probably not touch it at all once I get the new backlit Nook Touch.

They did bump up the specs in the newer Nook Tablet which makes it quite a bit smoother. Most noticeably is the memory boost.

Moon+ Reader on my Galaxy Note does quite a passable job as an Ebook reader.

It's not too small like phones normally are but is still small enough that I carry it around everywhere (whereas I have to deliberately bring my 10" tablet).

The AMOLED screen works quite nicely when I use light grey text on a black background. It even works decently well in bright light because black stays black.

It will be used mostly for reading. After doing a little research it seems the kindle has an experimental browser that may work with gmail. Has anyone here tried it? Does the nook simple touch have something similar?
The browser works fine for checking your mail, I've used it on trips to check Gmail and other stuff when I didn't want to drag along a laptop. It isn't the most pleasant device to browse the web on, e-Ink refresh rate is slow so it will be a lot more cumbersome than a browsing on an LCD based device, but it works for web browsing in a pinch. If she wants a device primarily for reading and just wants the ability to occasionally browse the web on it, an e-reader would work great.

I have to say, since it hasn't been mentioned, that the ipad2 is now cheaper than ever if you want a tablet that can function as a casual e-book reader. I picked one up at Microcenter for $360 (in store only)

I thought I read somewhere they turned off web browsing while using the free 3G.

I know some of you can go online with the Kindle 3G, but it really looks like that has changed, or we are not talking about the same Kindle.

WebKit-Based Browser
Kindle Touch 3G's experimental web browser is based on WebKit. It's easy to find the information you're looking for right from your Kindle Touch 3G. Kindle Touch 3G enables you to connect to the Kindle Store and access Wikipedia - all over 3G or Wi-Fi. Experimental web browsing on other websites is only available over Wi-Fi.

Kindle Keyboard features an experimental web browser based on WebKit to provide a better web browsing experience. Now it's easier than ever to find the information you're looking for right from your Kindle. Experimental web browsing is free.

Note: The keyboard one doesn't say anything about limited browsing on 3G only the touch mentions it.

For those who reported web browsing on 3G do you have the touch or keyboard? Also why would amazon limit one but not the other?
