I do smoke. I know what it's doing to me. I know I should quit.

Whenever someone comments to me about the cigarettes are going to kill me I always reply the same...

I smoke, and am trying to quit right now. I have gone from a pack and a half a day to three cigarettes, so I am getting there. But around here a pack of cigarettes cost 4.25 and a carton costs 42.00. One of the reasons I am trying to quit.

As for smoking because I am stupid, no, thats not the reason. But it sure is not one of the wisest decisions one could make, and its probably one of the reasons I started.

Ok, now let's apply this knowledge we've learned to real life:

Over 40 organic compounds have been isolated, purified, and characterized from tobacco which have all proven to be potent carcinogens. These substances, when taken alone and administered to lab rats, will cause mutations in cellular DNA which cause uncontrolled division and proliferation of cancerous cells. So if it is true that these substances by themselves can cause cancer, and that these substabces are indeed present in tobacco, then doesn't it naturally follow that tobacco causes cancer? I will accept that smokers realize this and choose to smoke anyways; what I cannot understand though, is how a smoker could deny that smoking presents a significant risk to their health. Are the researchers who came out with these data liars? The only explanation I have is that the people who deny the health risks of tobacco are either ignorant, or lying to themselves. I challenge anyone to find a single article which shows that tobacco is a safe substance.

It's not right to judge people on bad habits...anyone who's human has at least one. Some people smoke, some people like alcohol...some are addicted to caffeine (urine isn't supposed to smell like coca-cola, is it? I should probably call a doctor), etc etc. I personally dislike smoking, but calling smokers stupid is being hypocritical, you're all addicted to something stupid.

Just because people do &quot;stupid&quot; things such as eat unhealthy food doesn't justify smoking. It's sort of like that if everyone else jumped off a bridge, would that justify you jumping too?

Being a fairly cynical person, I am proposing that people are inherently stupid in many things they do; this thread fails to recognize this. People are stupid for eating fatty foods, drinking and driving, cheating on their partners, and of course inhaling toxic substances aka smoking. And all of you people who say that you'll die sooner or later are suggesting that leading a shorter life of poorer health is equivalent to a longer life of better health. Also let's not forget about both second hand smoke and the effects of smoking on the environment. Just admit that you are human and that you both possess incredibly brilliant charateristics, but also do many things that can be classified as stupid.

I am by no means telling anyone how to live, nor am I saying that people who smoke are any &quot;stupider&quot; than people who don't. I am merely stating that certain individuals seem to put themselves on a higher pedestal than they deserve.

I'm really glad to see people seeing through the tripe thrown out there by the anti-smoking nazis. I really find thetruth.com really kind of offensive. I've been aware of the risks of smoking as long as I can remember... I started smoking, knowing it was addictive, and now feel the ramifications of my own actions. What really made me angry was thetruth's radio ad about ripping out cigarette ads and people saying stuff like &quot;This is for taking 7 years of my life&quot;. I'm sorry, but who was smoking again... and who MADE you smoke... did someone come to your house threatening the life of your family if you didn't start??

Smoking is my own personal character flaw... at least myself and the smokers in this thread acknowledge that fact unlike the annoyin freaks who say the tobacco companies made them smoke.

I overall dislike smoking, but the ads by thetruth.com make me embarrased to be passively anti-smoking. They make up facts, bend the truth, and if you ever watch those idiotic tv commercials where &quot;people send them messages from the internet&quot;, they never actually address the question, instead they bring up useless facts.
