basics with cisco switch and router

I'm learning and very new to the router and switch environment at the level of cisco with command lines. I'm going to eventually be studying and trying to take my CCNA so learning the stuff I'm asking for help here I hope will help me.

Cisco 2800 series router
Cisco 3560G poe switch 24 port

cable modem > wireless router > cisco router> switch

This is the way I currently have it plugged in I'm working to configure it a different way once I figure some stuff out.

Logging in with SSH thru the Cisco router isn't a problem I finally got that part figured out. However I can't seem to route traffic in thru the switch to pull ip addresses from it as well as logging in with ssh. I'm having to use a console cable everytime I want to do something with it.

Layer 3 switch so I set a interface vlan 58 assigned ip and then setup the ssh commands similar to that of the router

I'm unable to ping from the router to the switch my machine to the switch etc I think its something to do with a routing protocol or making the switch and the router talk

I would highly suggest watching a video series to get a quick understanding of the ccna material. I believe cbt nuggets has a free trial.

The bare minimum you need for your setup is an interface on both the router and switch on the same network and then add static routes on each device or try using a routing protocol such as eigrp.

I agree with Lemieux66. CBTNuggets is amazing for CCNA. Jeremy made it so easy to understand everything. I used cbtnuggets->wendell odom/todd lammle book->transcender/boson exams. I did it all in that order. I ended up taking 100-101 and 200-101 exams and the exam itself was fun and challenging. I had been studying for the ccnp route exam and a lot of the topics were already covered except for redistribution and a few others. GNS3 is a huge help if you have the IOS images unless you plan on purchasing several routers for your home setup. I don't believe that GNS3 does switching yet though but in the future. I have not really been staying on top of what they are doing lately.

I'm holding off a little bit now because I think I'm going to wait for all the study material for the new ccnp exams to arrive. I already watched all the route videos they have and did all the labs in gns3 (multi area ospf, eigrp, bgp, redistribution, etc..) What's interesting is that a lot of the route material was already covered in the ccna so more than half of it was just review. I already contacted cbtnuggets and from what the support rep told me Keith is going to be working on the new ccnp r&s series instead of jeremy. Kind of hoping that's not true but keith is a cool guy also. I think I rather just take the new exams because I'm sure there will be new material on them that I will want to absorb now.

Thanks guys I went out and got it. Yea I can for sure say Jeremy does a great job. Could you provide anymore help with the project as far as the routing piece goes. I started using the command router rip version 2 and built the networks in the different subnets.

I will look into the other protocol eigrp and see what I can figure out with it.

I don't want to tell you exactly what to type, especially since I'm not 100% positive about what you're saying, so I'll just give you a hint...

You don't necessarily need a routing protocol for a simple network consisting of one L3 switch and one router, but I understand wanting to use them for learning. That said... You need to tell the switch how to get to the router, and the connecting ports need to be on the same network. (Which may or may not be obvious, but I don't know what you know)
