I'm getting pretty tired of all the french jokes flying about. What evidence, if any does one have to support their bigotry?

Take it like the french = letting the Nazi's take over France and making it way more difficult for other countries to fight Germany.

My grandpa (served in WW2) said the French were hated just as much as the Germans from what he saw.

Bigotry doesn't require evidence. That's why it's called bigotry. You need to rephrase your question.

American men hate the fact the Frenchmen are better lovers and more sexually attractive to women.

A common strategy to unite people, build bonds, and make them feel better about themselves is to insult, despise, or hate other groups of people.

There are many different levels of this, for instance hating enemies such as the Nazis or Al Qaeda is one level of overt hostility. But constantly fanning the flames of this hatred of ones enemies can seem warlike and reminds people of their fear of attack and the unknown.

For more pleasant situations, when one does not want to awaken their fear of enemies who pose potential serious danger, insults of a lesser intensity can be directed at less dangerous groups like racial minorities or the French.

One has to wonder if your grandfather is/was as myopic as you are.

What's the point in asking this question when you obviously don't care what the answer is... you've already labeled people.

Hmm, let me see if I can actually give you something concrete to think about.

1) The French tend to take contradictory views mostly for the sake of garnering attention. If America/the U.K. say the sun is hot, France will immediately release a statement to say it's cold. While opposing points of view are healthy and useful, it gets a little bit obvious and annoying at times. Especially when it's done 90% of the time.

2) Hypocrisy. I remember almost laughing out loud when I read France's President threaten to use nuclear weapons to retaliate in the case of terrorist attacks occurring on French soil. But France's position on Iran, a known provacateur in the Middle East (in concrete terms, by funding and funneling weapons to the terrorist group Hezbollah), is rather cozy. I imagine they wouldn't really be too fond of Israel nuking Iran, but hey, it's okay for France to threaten as much!

3) Racism. France (and Quebec in Canada) has a major problem with racism and the intolerance of other cultures than their own. There's a distinct cold shoulder being given to non-Caucasian immigrants, while the great irony is that the only natively French-speaking immigrants France or Quebec are likely to recieve are from countries like Algeria, Lebanon and Morocco. Yet these people are massively rejected, marginalized and isolated from the upper reaches of French society.

4) Cultural bigotry. French culture, by most benchmarks, is likely spiralling to its demise. This has made the native French more intolerant of other cultures and languages than ever, and it becomes expressed even in the country's laws. No religious headwear allowed in state schools? A law like that would mean near-civil war in the United States, but we know which country is derided for being provincial and intolerant more often than the other... Quebec and their French-only sign law is a joke unto itself.

5) Fiscal policies only a mother could love. France had a youth unemployment rate of 22% mostly attributable to the wackjob employment contracts mandated in the country, yet attempts to reform those laws were massively rebuffed and even generated incidents of violence on the nation's streets. Get with the program already - people don't have a right to a job. You're essentially enslaving business owners.

Because our imaginations are limited to such absurd postulations. Self centered children are not very romantic and neither are buttheads.

When was the last time you tried to win a girl away from a Frenchman. Doubtless you lack evidence because you are too smart to try or you've discovered that WOW is much better than sex.

So true. What is actually happening here is that we project our self hate which we are unconscious of intentionally because of its pain, onto others and imagine it's them that is the source of the hate that is actually our own hate for ourselves. This is why monsters swim in the sea at the ends of the earth. The monsters are feelings we have we fear to express as feeling. Repressed they leak out as paranoia.

Number 3 is completely wrong my friend. I am a immigrant living in Quebec and I have had chance to travel in much of Canada and USA, Quebec people is the most tolerant people you will find in N.A. They are not RACIST, they're honest , simple people and they will tell you in the face if they don't like you. They tend to protect their language, that's why they don't appreciate English taking place too much in their society but they won't give you cold shoulder because of your skin color. I've lived here for 20 years and the few times I got racist remarks come from , ironically, anglophones or immigrants. Actually, you ask anyone who lives in Montreal, Quebec about racism and they'll tell you that it's everywhere but no where near the level you'll see in big US cities.

However, Quebecers don't like French that much neither. French like to make fun of Quebecers and the opposite is true.

More so the Spaniards, Italians and Greeks...French men were metrosexuals before being a metrosexual was in fashion.

I'm getting pretty tired of all the french jokes flying about. What evidence, if any does one have to support their bigotry?

1. The whole Maginot Line failure is fun to poke at. France develops a supposedly inpenetrable line of defenses, and the Nazis simply drive around the entire system...with the French response being to surrender. Hence the "France Surrenders" joke across the web, most prominantly on fark.com

2. The Vichy government collaborated with the Nazis, and anti-semitism across France actually let to their supporting Hitler's final solution (to a certain extent)...were it not for the fact that Germany invaded France, France probably would have been a willing partner to the Axis.

3. Vietnam...France gets itself in trouble, America comes in once again to bail them out.

4. The Cold War...France, and its somewhat socialist sensibilities, created friction between our two nations...with America wondering why the French sometimes came across as ungrateful to the sacrifices made by our soldiers to liberate them from Nazi control.

That being said, there are more similarities then differences between our two cultures. Remember, the French played a fairly substantial role in the colony's liberation from England during the American Revolution.

I lived in Europe for 5 years, and visited France quite often. I very rarely encountered the French snobbery that many Americans complain about...most of the French I encountered were quite hospitable, particularly in rural areas...I only had one encounter with an elitist French snob, but that was in a restaurant in Paris...he was sitting at an adjacent table, and took it upon himself to engage me in political debate...we actually had an interesting exchange, although his girlfriend was shaking her head the whole time...I can't complain though, because he kept the wine flowing during the whole discussion.

Having visited Normandy, and various WW1 battlefields, the locals to those areas are actually quite fond of Americans and appreciative of the role we played in WW1 and WW2.

As a Chef trained primarily in classical French cuisine, I can honestly say that the many French Chef's I have worked with definitely earned the French reputation for being the dirtiest people on earth.

Well, you are welcome so very much, but I fear what you think is priceless is that I was hoist by my own petard. Nothing could be further from the truth. My first remark was my contribution to what I knew would be absurd, a rendition of stupid stereotypes about the French. I wanted to mirror the fray in my own subtle little way in the opposite direction. You can take from what I said, however, that in all resentment there is a certain measure of envy. In short, while Travis was quite serious, I was having a bit of disingenuous fun.

You mean you weren't serious with the first post  but ... but ...
It was just funny to see the two statements together I don't want you to think I was stating that you were hypocritical. It just struck me funny.

What can I say? I'm a clown. But I highly doubt I'm beyond being hypocritical and unaware of it, just not in this case.

Oh Noes...The "Cheese-eating Surrender-Monkeys"?

Better we should stick to "Freedom Fries and Freedom Toast", and let's "Freedom Fry" things from now on...and forget anything French...Maybe Freedom's Mustard too?

Yes, France has not always been a strong supporter of American "Imperalism" even though we "bailed them out" in 2 wars against the Germans, but being friends doesn't always mean the friend is 100% right 100% of the time. Nothing wrong with disagreeing on some things...
