First thing is these guy have to be pretty dedicated to be on the court at freaking 5AM. When playing, I don't mind the aggressive defense but when you are playing in such a manner that others can get hurt, you need to tone it down. I think it's fine to press in a game if it's close at the end. But since this is an established group you kind of have to mold yourself to their play style.

Hm... maybe you need to learn to play some real basketball? I played against some dude yesterday who would ram his body into me every chance he got. I don't mind being physical, especially when I play post, but chill out.

You are probably one of the guys who love running into the offensive lane trying to block the person, committing a foul each and every time, huh?

Main thing is, try not to hurt others... it's not like you guys are being paid to play.

There was one particular play today when the ball carrier had spun away from one guy toward me and the ball was a bit out of his control. I stepped in attempting to poke it away and lunge a bit further than I had anticipated I would. I lost my footing and went to the ground while poking the ball free. I definitely got to the ball before he did, not touching him at all, but his momentum carried him over me which caused him to fall. It wasn't my intention to take him down, but sometimes with my aggression/hustle it will cause another guy to run into me or lose their balance.
From the NCAA rules on personal Fouls:
1. A player shall not hold, push, charge, trip or impede the progress of an opponent by extending arm(s), shoulder(s), hip(s) or knee(s) or by bending his or her own body into other than a normal position; nor use any unreasonably rough tactics.

If you're not in a legal guarding position (or can't resume one) when that contact's made, it's going to be a foul on you. If you have to dive to the ground to poke the ball free, causing him to fall over you while you're on the floor, that's a foul. People that play out of control end up hurting others in addition to themselves and no one wants to get hurt in rec play.

By all means use your speed and quickness to your advantage. Get into those passing lanes before they see you. Hustle when there's an actual loose ball and get there first. If you can strip them without impeding their progress or making any contact (which you can do by going around their back), do so. But if you're fouling constantly when you're trying to use your speed, that's just as annoying as having that fat guy constantly foul you when he pushes you down in the post.

Your over aggressiveness almost hurt physically hurt him during a pickup game, that's why he was pissed.

You're allowed to play as hard as you want to as long as you aren't fouling excessively or otherwise put other people's health at risk. Diving for loose balls/rebounds is all good, but when you are borderline undercutting/tripping other players, that's crossing the line. It's just a pickup game man.

Did you at least help the guy up?

Why is it annoying? If you don't want to compete.... don't play? I mean... I just don't get it. Should I be letting them get off easy shots, complete easy passes and never have to protect the ball when dribbling? All so I don't annoy them? Oh and if there's a loose ball I'll only go for it if its easily within my reach. If I have to run for it... nah someone else is closer, right?

I agree with a few others in here, you might need to tone it down a bit if this is just a casual pick up game.

remember the harder you defend the easier it is for you to get crossed over and get your ankles broken. its fair game. playing since i was 7 years old. but remember respect the call, if they call a foul no matter if you hit them or not just let it go.

You can't be too uptight on D if everyone else is. However this sounds like a fairly competitive group, so I think you are well within your rights to play tough defense and hustle around. The guys who are bitching probably used to be in shape high school stars and now they are frustrated b/c they are fat and/or out of shape and are no longer "stars" of their little high school world. They probably get annoyed when a little guy can give them fits on D.

Oh ya, but don't be that guy who constantly tries to steal when someone else is dribbling at the top of the key. That is just damn annoying to have a guy constantly swiping at it when you are just dribbling there waiting for a pick and roll or something to happen.

Who you playing against? In my town we're like 50% Asian or something. The HS I went to was even higher. I hit up my HS or Junior High for ball and it's mostly the people we went to school with. Amazing that after 7 years, there's still a bunch of us living in this town. It's kinda understood that even when we don't know each other, we probably went to the same damn high school just at a different period o time.

Anyway, it's never too big of a deal there. I'll be honest and say that amongst some different ethnic groups, we see more tension. Typically this involves going to parks further away. The one time my friend almost got into a fight was against a couple of black guys.

You tend to say "white boy" so I'm trying to see you as the little white kid amongst a sea of big white guys or big black guys. I'm not sure. I tend not to play with the bigger 6' and up Asian guys also because I'm not the biggest out there either. It kinda depends on the group you play with on the street that defines how much aggression you will face.

Always start off soft? That's how it usually is in pick up. We've played overseas in Taiwan before and everyone was all nice and stuff. It was pretty obvious we were foreigners and so they tried to speak English to us and stuff. I'm sure everyone could've stepped up their game, but this is casual right?

Also, full court press? How often do you do that in pickup anyway? I mean how serious do people play d in pickup anyway? My experience hasn't seen too much full court. I personally don't run it, but I know a few people who do it here and there. You're making it sound like you do it too often. Maybe you're taking it too serious? But then again it depends on the group you're playing against. You make it sound like you do it a lot, but then at the same time it sounds like some people in your group play hard.

I played from the age of about 8 to 34, just retired last March due to a 2nd & final knee injury. Let me just say that I always hustled my tail off & played the hardest defense I could play. I can't remember a time where the guy I was guarding got a free or easy basket.

With that being said, in most cases, my aggressiveness & tenacity on defense usually made my teammates work harder or play smarter defense. But, it's all in the way you do it. One example, if the guy I was guarding wasn't really trying to set a bunch of picks & cut to the rim, I could help a teammate out if he got beat on a drive. This would usually lead to a teammate helping me out if / when I got picked. Assume for the sake of this example that my teammates weren't helping out a lot on defense prior to me helping them when they got picked or beat.

So, it just depends on how the game goes. As far as pressing, sure, I pressed, but not all the time. And when I did, I'd let my team know & ask 1 of them to join to improve the odds of snagging a steal & getting a layup or a dunk.

I was always a communicator, so I called out picks, helped on picks, asked for help when I switched on a pick, etc. You ask any D1 or NBA coach how important communication is on the court, & they'll say that next to playing good, smart aggressive defense, it's number 2 or tied for number 1.

You don't want to make a fool out of yourself though & be the only one pressing or being overly aggressive, so I agree with some of the sentiments regarding the flow of the game. For me, my teammates just fed off my hunger / desire / willingness to win, so I didn't have to do a lot to get them going. Timing is important too. For example, if you're going to help a teammate on D, you can't just leave your guy free to take the lane on an easy layup, you need to make sure he won't have free access.

Always check the perimeter before you leave your guy to help, or he's gonna go back door, probably on a pick or back screen & have an easy reverse layup. So know your surroundings before you just start leaving guys to help out on D. Sometimes you might think you're helping the team by helping your guy who got picked, but instead your hurting the team because your guy had an easy layup or short jump shot.

On offense, it's good to be aggressive too, especially with setting screens. Even if you don't plan on scoring a lot of points, set a ton of picks & make the guy guarding you have a miserable game. I'd probably set at least 8 picks, on average & have 3 assists, with maybe 6-7 points in a 15 pt. game. Make sure you "Go" every time you pick, even if you don't think you'll get the ball. If you don't "Go", you're making it too easy for your guy to double team your teammate, so you have to "Go". Cut the lane every time, who knows, maybe you get the ball 20% of the time. You start making those layups & you'll get the ball 75% of the time.

Anyway, that's my .02 for the game I played for most of my life & still love today...miss it every day...

These guys are probably just trying to get in some cardio and have fun doing it. 60 year old dudes arent looking for a hip replacement because you decided to dive halfway across the court for a loose ball at 530am.

At my gym full court to half court press is the norm.. as long as you're not fouling people in our games, no one would care how hard you play.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone play in a reset to the other side after score scheme.

Cuda, you wouldn't happen to be playing on the weekends at El Toyon park would you? Kind of a long shot, but I've been playing with that group for almost 20 years now.

Eh, some disappointing responses.
"I asked a question that wasn't really a question - I was just looking for validation for my actions, not actual evaluation and critique.."

I echo the sentiment that you adjust your play-style to that of the group. If you can't or won't do that, start or find another group.
