The batch programming language does not have the capability to make changes to a text file. You can do this with Perl, or Sed, or Awk, or .....

You can make it add to the text file, but i'm pretty sure you can't edit/replace something with straight batch

the sole definition of a batchfile is to execute a series of commands, and maybe to allow a little bit of user interaction, but anything else is beyond their scope of usage.

First you'd have to install them, none of them come with Windows. I believe the only 'real' language that comes with Windows is VB Script via Windows Scripting Host.

My suggestion go with perl. Download Active Perl and let us know what you think......

It would be pretty kludgy, but using the for and findstr commands you may be able to do this...
Read through the input file line-by-line.
Append each line to some output file, searching each line for the elements that you need to change and generating the correct line if necessary.
Rename the input file to input.old, rename the output file to the input file.

Is there some more info on what you are specifically trying to do?
