I like to e-mail my parents pictures home once in a while but photos in their original format are way too big.

Is there any program out there that will automatically resizxe a bunch of images to a pre-defined resolution? while leaving the originals intact.

Photoshop - Create and Action (basically "record" yourself resizing an image) > File > Automate > Batch > Run your resize Action

IRFanView - Free image editor that has a batch resize option + renaming option as well.

I second the suggestion for Irfanview. its freeware and easy to use.
use the Batch Conversion / Rename option under the File menu.

also, if you have XP, you can right click on image(s) and then select Send To.. and select Mail Recipient, a box should pop up giving you the option to Make all pictures smaller or keep original sizes. works great and is easy to send pictures to my dial-up friends and family.

get the Windows Power tool that lets your resize with a right click, it is the most useful thing MS has ever made:

MS PowerToys

Image Resizer
This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

Its free to

I also use the XP powertoy ^ ... except it renames all the files to append (Large) or (Medium), etc. to it. Can get annoying.

I also use it.
Just make a copy of the folder of pictures and run the resizing on that folder but tell it to overwrite the originals, then you don't get the dumb(I agree) file names.
