You make a million assumptions when you say an ET invader must be so advanced they could kill us easily. America can do that to any country and they aren't a thousand years more advanced. There are so many variables completely ignored.

You do realize what kind of technology is required for interstellar travel, right?

I saw this movie. Pretty bad, but I was with some friends and we had a good time. Audience was actually laughing at some parts of it.

Also, if you hate shaky-cam, run away! D:

Battle: Los Angeles

Metacritic:

Critic Score: 36/100

User Score: 6.3/10

Seems regular people like it more than critics do. I haven't seen it and will wait until it comes on like HBO or something.

It was a good popcorn movie.

Folks, remember what type of product it is. Good, fun mindless entertainment.

It's not supposed to be Memento where you fucking take it apart trying to understand it.

Sorry to nitpik, but an interstellar species would not be 100-150 years ahead of us, more like 1000-1500 years minimum ahead of us perhaps. In reality, 100000 years would be a blink of the eye on universe time scale. We would have zero chance if some species showed up to pwn earth.

Anyone else notice Science Channel has started showing Firefly from the beginning? Perhaps there is hope for a return to some good sci-fi, would love to see a new channel and not this sharktopuss crap. There movies are either copymocks such as Battle for LA, or based on some genetic mishap.

SyFy != Sci Fi

In this movie they were about that much ahead of us if you looked at their weapons and armor. They didnt have shields, they died from bullets, and they were using guns that used projectiles.

I'd expect a species to be well ahead of us if they are able to travel the universe. But really, there is no gurantee because they can travel around the universe that they will be able to wipe the floor with us either. It could be they found us like we find possible inhabitable planets and launched a colony worth of ships that takes thousands of years to reach us. Maybe they figured out how to live in a suspended state instead of traveling at light speed?

I suppose it might also be a false assumption that other intelligent life is as obsessed with killing and violence as we are. It could be that it's just not part of their nature to develop weaponry. Whereas every great invention in the history of mankind has pretty much been weaponized shortly after it's invention.

I enjoyed the movie. I had read some of the reviews going in, so my expectations weren't really that high. I feel like some of the scenes could have been cut (ex. the overly dramatic "emotional" scenes and cheesy lines that seemed out of place), but overall it was fun.

Respectfully disagree. I am coming from the POV that if an intelligent alien species has the technology to travel for thousands of years and/or at near light speed, overpowering current human technology would be an afterthought. You can't do this with any technology we currently have, nor are we anywhere close. Harnessing the required energy alone is well out of reach right now, let alone storing and using it for propulsion. Hell, we are still relying on a barely controlled explosion to break earths gravity and reach space.

Whether they wanted to or not is another question of course. Fun to think and debate about for sure.

EDIT: You ever heard of Dr. Michio Kaku? He frames this thinking better than I am capable of. See the following for more, basically his contention is the same: Any race capable of reaching us would be so vastly superior that we would be like ants to them.

The guarantee would be that an interstellar army would have space superiority. All they would need to do is start dropping rocks from space.

I agree, in general I would expect an alien race to have such a vastly superior technological advantage we wouldnt stand a chance. But...what I am painting here is the possibility they didnt really defeat interstellar travel like we would think they did. Instead of traveling at light speed they developed technology that allows them to be in a suspended state for thousands of years. They found us, pointed their cololinization ships at us and found out we were more organized and advanced than they thought when they arrive. In 150 years could be defeat that issue while still not coming close to defeating light speed?

In this movie the aliens were much closer to us in technology. I thnk it made for a better movie instead of a war of the worlds where it is basically getting our asses kicked for 2 hours to have the aliens die because they never heard of anti-biotics

As pointed out, just because a species is able to travel such great distances doesn't mean they are superior militarily. Its also possible that they looked at our planet, saw a bunch of apes and sent out colonization ships figuring nothing was here and showed up in current day in which we have spent the last few thousand years learning how to kill things whereas they spent X time traveling. I would still they they would have mass drivers to launch asteroids at the big cities though...

yup. too many bitching about things that were required to making the movie a real movie instead of watching humans get annihilated in minutes.

I enjoyed it, quite a lot. I was expecting crap and got a decent movie instead of an empty alien based shoot em up

In the Star Trek universe (granted, another fictional universe), the Vulcans could be classified as a race that was not obsessed with weapons-building. I suppose that it might be possible, however unlikely.

I actually enjoyed the movie. As others have said here, its a good mindless popcorn flick. I'd also echo the sentiments that it was ID4 meets Blackhawk Down. Close quarters, building to building fighting, coupled with a deus ex machina plot device and a superior alien race (although not quite as superior as in ID4) bent on destruction of the human race.

It's a little disturbing though how derivative some events in the movie are to ID4 and Blackhawk Down. (Possible spoiler warning from here on, but pretty vague so maybe not so much) Two such examples - the ending of the film mirrors the end of BD, and the arrival of the team at the FOB almost exactly mirrors the arrival of the civilian survivors at El Toro in ID4.

Just saw this tonight. What a horrible fucking movie. I saw it for free and I felt like I wasted my time and I usually like these types of movies. I was able to predict 95% of the things that were gonna happen.

Cliche Marine about to retire but all of a sudden gets pulled back into the drama. Apparently hes a bad ass but people dont like him cause he got some Marines killed. Enter newbie officer straight out of OCS who doesnt know jack shit and has to lead the experienced badass. Aliens invade, fuck up LA, black guy dies first. Gets ambushed, they run into the house saying "omg what do we doo". One guy obviously gets cut off and hides in the basement while the alien is looking for him. They all meet up, go to the police station and finds civilians with kids. Tries to evacuate them in a helicopter that only has enough for a few people and "woah" it gets blown up. Didnt see that coming. They then find an alien survivor out on the floor and drag him inside to figure out how to kill him. Discovered that "WOAH" you stab his heart. Blah blah escape on a bus, and omg they found out that the aliens can track their radios! badass marine goes and blows up jet by himself. Enter dramatic ambush where marines are getting picked off one by one and the newbie officer decides to sacrifice himself for the team. Enter emotional argument with other marines about trusting badass dude. They get rescued then all of a sudden badass dude decides to singe handedly go attack the main alien control center. Cue dramatic bromance where all of the others decide to not let him go alone. Squad of marines take out the control center, the most heavily guarded alien installation, by themselves. Saved the day and says "the fights not over"

Waste of 2 hours. I spent half the movie laughing and the other half trying to sleep.
