I picked up BF1943, having been a HUGE fan of BF1942 and having enjoyed BF2 and pretty much detested BF2142.
While 80% of BF1943 is just 1942, and then only 4 maps of that, they have done a lot to improve the gameplay. They've also taken away some aspects of 1942 that made it a more "hardcore" experience, but it's a lot more fun than BF Heroes IMO, and well worth the $15. I'm sure they're going to nickel and dime the hell out of gamers with $10 2-map DLC packs, but personally, for my money, the 3-4 maps it comes with are plenty, and I'll more than get my money out of it.
I will say the sound mix in this game is phenomenal, especially over nice home theater setup. It's almost worth the $15 just to enjoy hearing it.
