Battlefield 2 or battlefield 2142?

I have not played either battlefield 2 or battlefield 2142 before but heard so much good and bad about both!. Even though 2142 is newer, i dont know if i should get that or stick with the original battlefield 2 as it got better reviews and 2142 has not!

I have a good system to support the graphics for both games with

x1900xt!
x-fi soundcard
1 gb ram
Pentium D dual core 2.8ghz
160gb hd 7200rpm
5.1 speakers

Depends on your preferences...
Are you more fond of modern combat, with many vechicles and weapons, large maps and players
Or..
Do you prefer lots of ads, spyware, large robots from the future, laggy servers, and fewer vehicles

2GB of RAM helps Battlefield 2 and I would guess 2142 a lot.

It's require to play with max settings on the 64 player maps with no stuttering.

IMO, Battlefield 2142 is basically just an elaborate mod of Battlefield 2. The Titan mode is really little more than an elaborate version of CTF. The graphics are technically better but not by much and artistically speaking it's rather bland compared to BF2. So unless you really love sci-fi and mechs, I'd stick with Battlefield 2.

For most part I enjoyed playing BF2, I haven't tried BF2142 yet...and probaly won't. 2Gb of ram makes a big difference in BF2 so I'm assuming the same goes for BF2142. Either one you choose, just be prepared for a lot of bugs and plenty of patches.

I agree, I have both and I find the gameplay on BF2 to be better, the new one is just a prettier version and is too futuristic for my taste. I like flying the jets and helos in bf2, i bought 2142 when it came out, and have played it very little. Both are great, but 2142 is just a polished BF2.....

I noticed that most/all of you who are downplaying 2142 are previous BF2 players who did not put very much time, if any into 2142.

I was on a sponsored BF2 TWL/CAL team, but we disbanded near the send of summer '06 and I stopped playing for around 2 months. I picked up the demo of 2142 and got my a$$ handed to me -- its a completely different beast than 2. Some examples: Proning incurs a long-lasting accuracy penalty, machine guns get more accurate the longer you fire, you can sneak past claymores, etc.

Now that I have put some time into 2142 I am loving it, and have joined another semi-pro team which has active rosters in BF2 & 2142. It only leaves a sour taste in your mouth if you are heavily into Battlefield 2 and go to play 2142 expecting it to play the same; its like learning to 'be good' all over again.

That wasn't my point. I'm not saying it's the same game as BF2 and it certainly isn't. I've played a fair share of 2142, and I'm simply not enjoying it as much as I did BF2. And aside from from a minor graphical update and change of scenery, there aren't any major improvements or changes over BF2, which I found disappointing. The glitches I have come to expect, but not the lackluster changes. If I were to compare the two games side by side, BF2 is clearly the better game, IMO.

Go with BF2...There are more major mods out for it (You HAVE to try the Project Reality and Point of Existence mods), and as far as I'm concerned, it captures the true feeling of Battlefield moreso than 2142.

I almost hate BF2. I kind of like BF2142. That is the difference. But BF2142 benchies show that it is very very intensive compared to the former. A 1900xtx should be able to play at 1920x1440 or 2500x1600, each with 4x AA according to me from the benchies of 1600x1200 where the min FPS were 76 for a 1900xt 512. BF2142 on the other hand won't manage even 70FPS on 1280x1024 4x AA on a 1900xtx!

Ignore the above. This individual doesn't even have the games and is using demos.

I have both and run the exact settings with the same frame rates with my X1900XTX at 1600x1200, all settings high w/ 6x AA on both games. My fps avg between 70-100 based on the map.

To the OP - I have both BF2 and BF2142. BF2 is much better imho.

BF2 FTW and for one reason:

Infantry only patch! The game will get annoying when every time you spawn there is a tank/APC/Jet/Heli/etc sitting there to kill you. When that happens, come to an infantry-only server where true skill abounds.. Infantry only made BF2 10000000x better.

I started out playing bf2142 adn I think its great. Yes, the in game ads kinda irritate me a little (seeing core 2 duo ads everywhere) but I think people habe b*tched enough about these ads. The one thing I want more of are tropical & desert maps like bf2 has. Most of the 2142 maps are depressing & cold. Other than that, the graphics are a bit more refined, the helo's are WAY easier to fly.

I prefer BF2.

I have played both and I really love the gameplay in BF2. Now that the game code has "matured" I have found it to be very stable as well.

I played BF2 for more than a year (~400 hours total), but haven't played a single match since buying BF2142. For conquest mode (capture the flag, sort of), I think BF2 edges out BF2142, but Titan mode for BF2142 blows anything BF2 has to offer away, IMO. And the unlock system in 2142 is fantastic. Both games are plagued with bugs, and BF2142 requires a fairly demanding rig (the coding for the Titans is so bad that the lag makes it unplayable for many people, including myself occasionally), but the crap about ads and spyware in 2142 has been *way* overblown. Don't let that scare you away.
