I recently picked up the BF2 collection which includes all expansions because a friend of mine said it was a great game for people that like shooters. While it was only 30$ I feel like it was a complete waste of money. The air combat is retarded, land vehicles get blown up before you can really do anything, and the actual gun play is atrocious. I tried an infantry only server but it's only a little bit better than waiting in line for a jet on some fucking boat with 8 other people. Enemies just bunny hop around and lob grenades 100 meters away, guns are inconsistent, and 3 of the classes are really unnecessary. I mean I would think that a FPS released in 2005 would at least have better firefights than decade+ old Counter-Strike.

Am I alone in thinking that BF2 is really bad? Granted, I've only played a few hours, does the game start to grow on you the longer you play?

I reinstalled BF2 over the weekend because my newphew wanted to play with me. I tried a public server and ran into the same opinion within the hour. I swear I hit a guy twice with a 50 cal and he was a sniper as well (I think), and turns around and throws a grenade at me and kills me.

I've played it once, and it was really lame. Guns are inconsistent like you said, and the jets are cheap shit. You're also lucky if ur friends don't run over you with vehicles.

No and no.

I tried really hard to get into this game quite a while back and I just couldn't do it. It felt really unbalanced, I hated the vehicles, and the damage/hitboxes were so out of whack and inconsistent I just gave up and never looked back.

It's a fun enough game. I still play both BF2 and BF2142 most nights. Air is ridiculously over-powered, and the "kill everything within the circle of death" arty is frustrating, but I like the large maps and spread-out play. The complaints about weapon accuracy stem from the fact that the weapons project a circle of probability on to your target, i.e. they aren't tracking individual bullets. So you can occasionally fire a burst right into an opponent and still miss. Other than that, if some code could be added to make bunny hoppers spontaneously explode into red spray things would be fine.

Have you tried some of the user / player made mods? They may make the game more to your liking. Not sure how many people are still playing on mod servers though...

I really enjoyed BF2, it is my 2nd favorite multiplayer FPS game (2nd only to Desert Combat mod for BF1).

I definitely like this game. It's one of those games that has a slightly steep learning curve and not a immediate pickup and start pwning game. I took a good two months or so before I was able to get to the top of servers and actually start playing well. This is the FPS that I've played the most from the time I bought it earlier this year. In fact, I think this is the only multiplayer FPS that I've played for the past 3 months.

Maybe you should just try a better adminned server? I enjoy the game, but not as much as 2142 or even original BF42.

I love the game. I don't know what you mean about land vehicles being underpowered - many people complain that tanks dominate too much. People complain about jets/helis a lot too, but the thing is that you have to be a really good pilot to stay alive - you're a pretty hot target. The infantry combat isn't great, but it's better than the crap in BF1942 (great game, just had shitty man-to-man combat).

Have you patched it?

One of the patches really reduced the distance a 'nade could be thrown. As stated, it is a love or hate game. I personally really like it, especially when playing in a squad with my friends and killing a bunch of people that just whine about the game.

Desertcombat mod for BF1942 was definitely better because of the naval battles, C-130 gunship, and the MH-53 chopper alone.

this game does have alot that sucks about it but I still am addicted to it. Especially the big servers with Highway to tampa. I think jets should be required to land for repairs and munitions, so should helo's. And jets should not be allowed FF>off nor should arty.
the CV4 jeep ramming should not be allowed FF>off and C4 jumping is just impossible in real combat and should be banned.

Whatever happened to the patch that was being talked about a few weeks back?

And, everyone, here's how it is. Guns are inaccurate if you hold the trigger, if you can't figure that out, don't play. Sniper rifles kill with headshot only, it's a balancing feature, and, I hate snipers, so it's good. Air is easily raped by any decent stinger team, so learn to play. Classes you should play are medic and AT, the others are very, VERY situational. Never use starting medic gun, use the L96 and you'll do alot better, just remember do NOT HOLD THE FIRE BUTTON DOWN.


If Air-force is that bad for you, play infantry only servers.

If you think public servers are full of total morons and idiots just spamming nades, try the Battlefield 2 Combat Tour of duty -

I swear, being in this team-based tournament makes the game AMAZING. People actually no what they're doing and will help you get better.

yes the Bf2 and BF2142 tournaments were awesome. BF2 is still a fun game with a couple buddies on vent to just screw around in. And bunny hopping? hell yeah..I CAN DANCE ALL DAY! The worst were the dolphin diving PKM'ers one shot kill when they fly to a prone position. Now whenever I play it I just run around and jihad everyone with a jeep. It is much more fun to play that game NOT seriously then to play it seriously. If you want a more serious game go play Americas Army.

I really like BF2. Its the game I have played the most, and I still play it regularly. BF Vietnam was the first online game I owned, and I really liked that too. All AI based games are of no interest to me after playing these. Just can't beat real opponents.
I always wished they would make a game that combines the best of those games: the technical upgrades of BF2, and the fun of BF Vietnam. I liked the lush environments in BFV, the old-school weapons, vehicles, etc. and the radio in the vehicles that you could play your own music choices from. That was awsome. I find something about the "WorldWar3" aspect of BF2 and BF2042 a bit depressing for a game for some reason. I prefered driving along a beautiful beach in my jeep listening to tunes in BFV, than hidding behind piles of garbage and bombed out buildings in the Middle East ala BF2. And something about jumping over laser rockets and stuff seems silly in BF2042, reminded me of UT or something, never could get into it without feeling like I'm 9 years old, haha.
I would really like to see a new BF game with some of the features of Bad Company for the PC.
Oh ya, and I liek the fact that I can always find a full low ping server, even where I live, and that they are FREE. I don't want to get a game, no matter how good, if I have to pay a monthly subscription fee.

I feel mixed about the game. I like playing infantry only maps and I agree with most that you should be dead if I hit you with a sniper rifle. I hate the widescreen support EA gives you and it sux that you have to tweak your settings to get optimal resolutions in the game. We should all blame EA for not coming up with a patch to fix that. And lastly.... it's made by EA... the same guys that sold me the BF2 set with no widescreen support, and EA 07 Sports pack with no widescreen support and no game pad support for my xbox 360 pad, shoved DRM up my ass and is trying to write their own business model for "licensing" game so you can only install the game thrice and need to phone home every few days to check with mom to see if my games are legit (EA download manager sucks don't use it), the same company that signed an exclusive agreement with the NFL and spoon feeds me a new copy of Madden every year with virtually no changes. Spoon fed me Madden for PS3 that had fewer features than my PS2 version... I can go on and on and on... grrr... EA...
