With an e8500 @ 4GHz, 6870 I'm getting 40-45 fps at 1650x900 on low/medium. Cant wait to upgrade when the next gen stuff
comes out.
That's weird, i have a 6870 1gb and i get 65fps average in Caspian Border 64player CQ on High/medium, but without any AA. This is at 1080p. On other maps i get over 70fps average, 64player.
Termie; I have a Phenom II 965be at stock speeds, gpu also stock.
There you have a 6870 on a dual core. Barely playable at low/medium.
Here you have a 6870 on a quad. Totally different experience. Very playable at medium/high.
Exactly - Nothing odd at all about this. I'd say anything above a $100 GPU needs a quad to perform up to expectations in this game.
Got some interesting graphs for you data hounds.
I've posted about vram and system ram use before, but take a look at what happened here. My vram is holding steady at 1.8GB, or 900MB per card. I have that under control since I'm not using MSAA or ultra textures. But I got the dreaded Windows theme error. Why? Well, take a look at the right side where you can see system memory use. It's gone out of control. Over the gaming session it went from 4GB used to 6GB used. And yet when I checked the task manager, BF3 was only using 1.25GB. I think there's some kind of memory leak that's tripping the Windows theme error - fooling W7 into thinking VRAM is running out. I'm no expert on this, so I'd love to hear others' opinions.
Anyway, food for thought. As you can see, this game craves CPU power in multiplayer. It doesn't affect me too much, as I typically run with vsync to limit tearing and reduce heat/power. But like I said, I'm going to do some testing with HT on - I have a feeling it will give my CPU some breathing room...

"fooling W7 into thinking VRAM is running out. I'm no expert on this, so I'd love to hear others' opinions."
no expert here either , but for a long time now running games and sli I will do this.
-[had to do this in one of the stalker game [cop with complete mod.] to run sli.]
-once a game icon is loaded on the desktop I right click on it,
-go to properties
-click on the compatibly tab
-check \ disable desk top composition
-when you now click the bf3 icon ,it will turn the task bar a solid color ,turning off some windows eye candy , yours is not a solid color when running bf3 so thought I would mention it.
-some say it will save 100mb of vram. did not test that myself.

Ah...it's a crossfire problem, not a BF3 problem! Thanks for the tip. I just made the change to the desktop icon. The catch is that I usually start BF3 from Battlelog, so I'll have to get used to using the icon.
I guess this is one of those "dual card headaches" I heard so much about!
Does a 590 or 6990 have this issue?
Don't you have to run bf3 from the battle log? How can you load it with the icon, since the battlelog is what gets you in games?
I can't say whether this affects the 590 or 6990, but I tried it this morning, and realized that all the icon does is start up origin and take you to the Battlelog. I don't think you can get into a game without battlelog, even singleplayer games. During this entire process, the windows theme is in basic mode (since I started by clicking on the BF3 icon). It doesn't go back to Aero until I quit Origin.
So you have origin going to default, or BF3 icon? I have origin auto load with windows, so I am curious.
I have 2x6950's, and I have the green flicker, and windows theme message popping up all the time.
I am contemplating selling the 6950's, to get a 6990 or 590 to get rid of this message, and green flicker. Can anyone confirm/deny they have these 2 issues with these cards?
same, so i'll try that for origin, and tell it to not auto boot.
i get 65 to 70fps with my xfx 6950 with everything set to ultra i also have a water cooled core 17 2600k clocked at 4.2 ghz and 8 gig ram great game
Was just reading in this latest patch DICE added a GameTime.MaxVariableFps console command. This allows you to put a cap on your framerate without using vsync.
Very nice.
Weird, after this patch the game runs slower for me...5 fps average less and the minimum fps is down from 49 to 42.
Which gpu are you using?
FYI, new multiplayer benches from HardOCP will give people a good understanding of how BF3 performs in multiplayer: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/11/22/battlefield_3_multiplayer_performance_iq_review
Keep in mind that HardOCP is looking at 60fps as playable. I'm sure many people are playing at less than that and would accept the trade-off for better image quality.
And just one quick editorial point - HardOCP insists on matching AMD cards against Nvidia cards that are in the higher price bracket. The results aren't pretty for AMD, but keep in mind that each AMD card is $50-100 less than the Nvidia card it is up against.
