I'm looking to build a micro-ATX gaming machine just for FPS gaming, specifically Battlefield Bad Company 2. Looking for your thoughts on what I have so far:

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Gaming only (Battlefield Bad Company 2)

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
<$2000

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference.
None.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Monitor/TV: Panasonic 46-inch 1080p Plasma (VIERA TC-P46G10)

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
Yes, I have a similar build to this one:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2047262

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Default speeds.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.
TV is 1080p, but highest that BFBC2 will allow with smooth framerates

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
March 2010

Does that mATX case really fit a 5870/full size PSU??? Your system would be better than mine and BF: BC2 runs on my system perfectly with everything turned up.

If you dont plan on going SLi.. I would go with the MSi x58 microatx board that is 170 i believe.

I would downgrade to a 5850, and upgrade to a 80GB Intel SSD

You don't mention your sound setup so I'm going to list a couple of options.

  • HDMI to TV: don't need the sound card because the Radeon 5000 series all have their own (digital) sound hardware built in.
  • HDMI to receiver: same as above
  • S/PDIF to receiver: don't need a sound card because the motherboard has optical and coax digital outs
  • Analog audio to PC speakers: sound card might be of marginal benefit, but the integrated audio should be fine
My point is that you can most likely save the $90 on the sound card and put it elsewhere in the build.

Great point-- I don't have great speakers and I'd probably use headphones anyway to avoid annoying my neighbors. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, that was one of the selling points of the case-- full size PSU and full size video card slots.

WOW that's cool but I wonder how good airflow is in that thing. Good thing you're getting a modular psu or else it'd be hell for cable management in there. Your system will eat BFBC2 alive.
