Gee, it's exactly what I don't want! Dumbed down and cartoony!? As for seeing the the dying film model of staggered releases as a good thing... well that just shows the backwards mentality. Also, developing a "franchise" is ridiculous if the quality is shoddy -as good as branding junk at the dollar store. Still, the proof's in the puddin', as 'twere. But thus far the BF series has gone downhill since the original.

I don't know; I hope so. The studio that is developing this load of shit is Stockholm DICE (BF1942,BF2), so unless they've got 5 hands, BF3 will not come out as planned, or it'll be made by a different studio of DICE and suck.

It's FREE, that kind of negates the point of being so bitchy about it don't you think? They're still making Bad Company and BF3, this is just some ancillary game they're putting out too. People will whine about anything.

Its their shoddy attempt to copy valves TF2 in the vain hope that EA will start to get a reputation like valve or any other good and reputable games developer has. They know that in the next 10 or so years that activision blizzard will dominate them in the PC games market and they need a change of image and some creativity to combat this, getting a reputation and generally decent image similar to valves would help them a lot rather than the evil empire image they have right now.

Thats a massive guesstimate of the future there but its what i can see happening, and thats why i think they're trying to copy valve with this new free game.

Bottom line is, they don't even make decent paid for games! How the heck can anyone expect something thats free to even get past the installation stage lol...

I don't really give a shit either way. EA are a bunch of asshats, and Valve distributes their shit over STEAM, and EA wants to make extra bucks, so they publish it retail.

Hopefully this will be more BF than TF. If they pull a Valve and over-simplify the game then it'll just die off, much like TF2's current free fall (minus the Xmas bump).

yeah, tf2 was fun at first but then it just got boring because there are so few maps.
i haven't touched the game in probably months.

Valve probably got the best distribution deal through them considering how badly EA needs to improve their image.

EA was the ones who ported the PS3 version, and needless to say it's the buggiest and runs the worst.

I suspect the motive for this endeavor is to keep the BF name and brand alive for the next year. COD4 is the heir apparent to the realistic military FPS title right now. BF3 wont be out for a while and the gameplay will barely change.

Making it stylized/cartoony lets them market to a younger audience without the ESRB dance.

Making it free allows them to tap into the Counterstrike crowd. There doesn't seem to be any modern retail game that can ween the kiddies off of the free, minimal system req, pwn fest mentality of CS 1.6. So the only way to draw some of those players away is too make a "FREE" game. Once they're playing BFheroes, then you can get them to spend on the next version or real (BF3) version.

There are new, official TF2 maps coming soon. Two new ones I believe.

i did play some user made maps but they were really very crappy.

There are a few very, very good ones (I'm a big fan of Lazytown and Castle). There are definitely some crap ones as well, but heck, I still love playing Dustbowl and 2Fort, so what do I know.

TF2 has some faulty assumptions at the very core of the game, in my opinion. But I don't think this is the game EA/Dice is going after. I think they're going after the original Counter Strike, at least based on the hardware requirement comments.

It should be interesting to see if they pull it off, at the very least.
