Hopefully this will be more BF than TF. If they pull a Valve and over-simplify the game then it'll just die off, much like TF2's current free fall (minus the Xmas bump).

yeah, tf2 was fun at first but then it just got boring because there are so few maps.
i haven't touched the game in probably months.

There's plenty of user created maps for TF2. You should start playing again. You are missing out.

i did play some user made maps but they were really very crappy.

There are a few very, very good ones (I'm a big fan of Lazytown and Castle). There are definitely some crap ones as well, but heck, I still love playing Dustbowl and 2Fort, so what do I know.

KT

the other thing is that i only like the CTF game type. I don't really care for the capture point ones.

Well that is a bit of a problem then. There is an all CTF server though, which I played on a while back. It had a rotation of about 5 or so CTF maps; maybe that would boil your potato.

Not really. I blame the rejects who refuse to purchase via Steam because they don't trust not having a CD even if it means supporting something great for the hobby they love.

Also, I'm still playing TF2, the biggest problem right now is server admins NOT running the excellent maps that are OUT. The maps are there, take a look online, server admins simply aren't running them. And every custom server I've seen has really, really bad custom maps like fucking halo remakes in their rotation instead of stuff like the Smooth32 or Well6 remakes.

(Yes, I swore, that Halo custom map was so bad I wanted to vomit blood)

My theory is that in order to download this, you will need to sign up for some STEAM like EA application. They already have something like this but maybe they have something new up their sleeves. A free game with the name battlefield ought to give it the exposure they want.

There's also a *free* Quake and an Unreal game coming out this year too.. and all will be full of in-game ads, even Battlefield Heroes.
I think they want to get some good publicity and that might make people buy into their old as well as new games coming out.

According to an article in Games for Windows, the devs of BF:H had the idea of cartoony graphics before Valve announced TF2.

I was actually going to mention that, Shawn Elliot on the GFW podcast said that they were working on the same angle before Valve announced that TF2 would have that look.

Plus, for me personally, I think the TF2 player models are head and shoulders above what I'm seeing in BF:H. The BF:H guys look very stiff and static in the gameplay videos I saw. I don't think this is going to own TF2 anytime soon.

Lazytown and Castle rock! I'm also hooked on playing the Mario Kart level, which is horribly buggy and has no real purpose other than to blow the crap out of people on the other team and go up in the main building the change the music occasionally, but for some reason, I love it.

Exactly, you both beat me to it.

People in this thread are completely missing the point. This is going to be a free game that should run on virtually any PC and that could draw a lot of people into gaming who normally wouldn't even consider it. I hate EA as much as anyone, but to bitch and moan about something like that is a little short-sighted IMO. It's not supposed to be some epic graphically-intensive powerhouse.

The Mario Kart level is pretty cool, IMO. I love going into the music room and meleeing against the other players. Winner got to choose the song.

I find Mario Kart ok until everyone starts switching to Sniper and pwning everyone long distance. That completely ruins it for me.

I think it's pretty awesome actually, and if it's a model that works for them, I hope they do more things like this. I was just saying I don't think it's going to replace TF2, as I've heard other people say. I don't think it's going to be nearly as fleshed out as that game, and it doesn't need to be. As long as it works, is balanced, and it fun to play, that's pretty much all i need.

That started happening at the server I was on too. Eventually, we all switched to Heavies.

Pffffb, and I bet they had the idea of making it a free to download, micro-transaction based game before all the Korean MMOs too? I don't buy it, they even cite TF2 in their own dev blog, along with NOLF which used no special rendering at all, and XIII which is full on cel-shading and very different from both BF:H and TF2's visual style.

They're talking about being compared to those games.

we knew that there was a chance we could be compared to the small but well known group of PC shooters that have separated themselves from the standard realistic style with a cartoon look ? most notably Monolith?s No One Lives Forever, Ubisoft?s XIII and Valve?s Team Fortress 2

What's your point? What I'm saying is how could they have known they'd be compared to a game like TF2 if they had the idea of that art style before the game was even announced? I haven't read the article you're referring to so I don't know exactly who said what, but we have straight from the Developer's own blog evidence to the contrary.

Read the Feb 4th entry called "The First Step". The guy who conceptualized the whole game says he didn't even start working with DICE until January 2007, about 6 months after the first TF2 trailer was released. He goes on to explain how from the beginning the game has been nothing more than a way to capitalize on the success of the South Korean micro-transaction based games industry.

It doesn't take a genius to know that a game would be compared to similar games. If I were to start making a game where you go from point to point, capturing spawns, I should know that people are going to compare it to BattleField.

lol no shit, but it takes a psychic to know that your game is going to be compared to another game that doesn't exist yet.

I'm talking about the article in Games for Windows where someone apparently claimed they came up with their art direction before Valve announced TF2, which according to the blog on the official website for Battlefield Heroes, is impossible.
