What era of warfare is the theme for Battlefield V? I got the email from EA but they didn't say what era.

I don't hate the franchise, but the last one I enjoyed was BF2. I own BF3, played it a grand total of around 15 hours. Maybe a total of 25 hours of BF4 (which I also own). I skipped BF1.

Not sure if I would be interested in another one. Maybe one set in the future, they did that already of course with 2142 but I'd like to see that happen again. I'm tired of WW2 stuff, had more than enough of it over the decades (and playing something like 900 hours of Day of Defeat was amazing but I don't need that much more). The only way that it might be interesting for me if it's set within the WW2 period is only if they do a Steampunk spin-off alteration of it in the veins of New Order (Wolfenstein). But despite all of this, I would actually like it if they really dared, if they got super bold and went a completely different direction. Like... I don't know a Battlefield game with Mecha warfare or an alien invasion (screw zombie apocalypse). Or heck, if they give us some cell shaded or colorful and humor-filled game with a lot of focus on single player maybe in the veins of Borderlands or... I don't know. Something new, and fresh. But no... I know, they'll stay with the traditional BF formula.

Yeah there have been too many WWII games, way too many. This includes Battlefield 1942. Honestly though battlefield is beginning to remind me of CoD too much. It never really does anything different, just new coat of paint.

While I'd enjoy some variety in games sometimes you just want a really well done polished shooter with excellent maps and battlefield does that. I am a fan of more modern era or futuristic shooters so I wish they would go in that direction as well. I wasn't going to pick up bf1 because it was too 'old' of a setting for me but it turned out to be a fantastic game. I tend to focus more on multiplayer infantry only game modes and map sizes so I hope they really focus in on that but I can't expect every game to revolutionize fps gaming. All we'd have are revolutions. Battlefield is one of the only reliables out there so I hope they don't stray too far since they only make a BF game every so often. If they want to get funky, they can use Bad Company for that.

I'll probably end up getting this one but if it's not good it may be my last. I couldn't get into BF1. After my experiences with Battlefront 1 and Battlefield 1 plus the issues with Battlefront 2 they really need to knock this out of the park. It's not that the content is lacking or the overall product is not polished. It just feels like there been a slow fundamental change to how the games feel and play since BF2/2142/BC2 through BF1. I personally feel it's been leaning more towards an arcade style CoD rather than an ARMA-lite sim type game. It always played somewhere between those two styles but I hope they reel it back in this time around.

I never bothered with Battlefront games. Were they the same studios as Battlefield or just the same engine?

What didn't you like about BF1? I was really turned off by the era, but once I said fuck it and started playing, the gameplay is just too good and polished. I don't think it feels like a COD game at all, it just feels better. And map sizes. Big deal to me.

I don't really like big maps where I walk for what seems like ages and then get killed without seeing a single person lol

Honestly I miss arena shooters. They're just never going to come back.

I think this one will be just another modern battlefield game.Or a WWII game. I only enjoyed BF1 because I could use the planes, but it would be way cooler if it was jets or even just WWII prop-driven aircraft.

The problem with doing that is that the map sizes can't really increase much over what they already have with BF1... yet the planes must travel at least 3x as fast as BF1 just to be somewhat accurate WWII planes.... and for jets it gets sort of ridiculous. You need maps that are at least 40x40km and that is simply not possible with today's hardware. Maybe when we have 64 core 5nm Epyc/Navi based Consoles with NMVe storage and 32GB HBM2 frame buffers we can get a decently accurate modern jet combat game.

I feel you on the map size. Sometimes they are too big if you just play infantry. Some maps/game modes in BF games you gotta get on vehicles or it sucks. That can be fun. But I prefer infantry-only warfare. That's why I play TDM and Rush modes primarily. Infantry focused. A BF1 Team Deathmatch map to me is the perfect size. I have a moment to breathe if I want to but I can spawn in on action in a couple seconds as well. If you want a fast paced shooter COD is where it is it seems. Eventually they'll redo some arena style shooters I'm sure.

Except CoD sucks as a shooter. Loadouts always suck to me, kill streaks suck, the skill ceiling is pretty low. I was bummed that Doom's MP wasn't too good, the shooting mechanics and campaign are fun. I miss shooters that weren't limiting based on your class, your loadout, or your character abilities. Also think any game that locks better weapons behind some type of point system or ranking is lame. The type of shooters I want just won't make it in today's environment and I've accepted it. The new UT kind of died and Quake Champions turned into something less like Quake 3 Arena than a lot of people expected so it didn't gain much support. I guess I'm not a fan of modern shooter mechanics like character or class based systems where some classes just get more health than others or have unique abilities etc. I never evolved with the genre I guess.

Never played UT or Quake but I feel you on the locking better weapons stuff. I want a game where we all have access to the same guns and equipment from the get go, get on some balanced maps and play on skills. I have no issue with a variety of classes though. Usually when I buy a BF game I suck it up and buy the infantry weapon tree right off of the bat. Then if a gun comes out with the DLC then I have to complete the assignments for it. But it can be very annoying. At the least give us a bunch of servers and game modes where all guns are unlocked and it's just a fight based on skill, not how many hours you put in unlocking stuff.

In Quake or UT they were basically spawn you in a map, you start with a basic pistol or machine gun. Weapons, armor, and health packs are placed around the map at set locations. Learning the map and controlling certain pickups was key strategy. After a time these items respawn so you could basically time when the rocket launcher would appear and go grab it to prevent someone else from getting it. Another strategy I remember is picking up an item late. In other words if a weapon spawns every 15 seconds at a particular location, you could grab it at 18 seconds instead of right as it spawns. This changes the spawn timer and could throw someone off their game. Also a lot of maps had the best weapons in an area that made you vulnerable. One Quake 2 map had a weapon that required you to dive underwater and swim down a tunnel. You were basically a sitting duck if you went for it so you had to plan it out. However the reward on the other end of the tunnel gave you a big advantage as long as you had good aim.

This was all before Battlefield, CoD etc. Things changed, especially in regard to health. The old arena shooters had no health regen. Until you pick up a health pack you never gained any health back after a fight. It was common for someone to pick off the survivors of a battle for easy kills.

THat sounds like fun. Not for everyone but fun - and they could easily incorporate that style of play as a game mode for some of these existing style shooters. Hopefully they will do that sooner than later.

Also I do feel you on COD - it just has like this kind of bouncy arcade game feel to it I don't like. Hence my only other option for a real good polished multiplayer shooter with decently larger servers is BF. Haven't played the latest Rainbow Six as it seems like it's just a bunch of set pieces. Not fun if you like to also run and gun.

Sure someone could add something like that as a game mode. Anyway back on topic I hope the new game goes a bit sci-fi to be honest. Maybe not even on Earth. I know it's been done before with games like Halo and others, using alien races and weaponry but I think it might actually make for a cool Battlefield game the more I think about it.

That would make me very happy. I did enjoy BF 2142 and put a lot of hours on that game. I think a totally alien world Battlefield would be the best reveal of all the options out there. But I just don't see it happening. But would they really do WWII again? Or another modern day shooter? We shall find out in 2 days.

There just aren't enough good large scale online shooters that are polished enough out there. It's nice to talk about what could be though. My reflexes aren't getting any better at 43 years old young and counting - I need these games to come out now.

Haven't heard of Overwatch?

Battlefield ahs been the go to game for my fiends and I to play together. Though not the release cycle seems too fast. I would really like another take on 2142. Loved the Titan game mode.

I just remember playing medic in 2142 using the Voss gun. It was epic.

That's why I liked bf2 a lot. Maps were big enough that unarmed transport was a big deal. If you got out of position even with transport you likely couldn't zip over in 10 seconds to stop a flag cap. Spending awhile to penetrate enemy lines and back capping was a really solid strategy.

I just hope whatever era it is they don't fuck up hardcore mode yet again.

Not interested. Too many other good games out there that aren't ruined by EAs microtransactions/rank and unlock grind.

Looking forward to Hell let loose, Post Scriptum, and I'm already having fun with Squad which feels a lot like BF2 since the devs are former BF2: PR devs.

Pretty much confirmed to be WW2 on their Facebook. Short clip of a soldier with WW2 aviator goggles, British & German flag emblems. Sigh... Doubt I'll buy it if that's the case. BF1/WW1 got old reallll quick for me.

yea I'm good, ever since BF3 I think I'm done with the EA model. didn't even touch 4, hardline, or 1

WWII stuff is dope but unless they really change things up (and why would they?) then I wont even consider it.

If its WWII I wonder how the gameplay will be any different? They already gave everyone and their dog semiauto or automatic weapons for WWI. Tanks change. Mostly the same locations. Bazookas galore? A couple helicopters show up, but nothing really combatish.

Korean War gone hot is want I really wanted to see. Plentiful automatics. Helos, modernish tanks, but before we have to deal with lock on everything.
