Well, found my problem:
"ATI 9800 PRO
- Battlefield does not support some of the hardware features of the
ATI 9800. If you experience strange graphical anomalies with this card,
exit Battlefield Vietnam and bring up the display properties on your desktop.
Click on Settings -> Advanced -> 3D. In the 3D settings for
Direct3D make sure the "Use custom settings" box is not checked.
If it is, make sure the "Application Preference" checkboxes for
anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are turned on."

16 FPS on a 9800 Pro??!! I know the 1700+ is getting a little dated, but 16 FPS !!??

Yeah, my friend can play it with his 9600 Pro and get like 80 fps...My computer is messed though, there was another game it doesn't run...i'm reinstalling windows right now

Anyone? NFS4? kuk?

All I saw was 1280 x 960 or something like that in the video section. Not unless there's a way to do it in the config file?

Somebody please help. When I try to start the game it tells me to log onto an account with administrative privaledges but I'm logged onto the only admin account on the computer. This is under Windows XP Home.

The only thing I can think of, is that the admin account (the only one I use on the system) isn't actually called "Administrator" but "Gimpy" instead. I tried logging off and logging on "Administrator" but it tells it is unable to access that account or something along those lines. Any ideas? Under the control panel settings, "Gimpy" has full administrative privaledges. What the hell?!!?

Manually editing your video.con file with the resolution you want will allow it. There is a link to the instructions on the first page of this thread, I can say first hand that it works as I tried it as a shot in the dark when I bought my lcd last month and realized that BF1942 didn't support 1280x1024 in the video options setup.

I'm running it on an XP 1700+ with a GF3 Ti200 and 512MB PC 2100.
It runs nice and smooth with the following settings:
1024x768x32
No AA or AF.
All graphics settings on Medium.
Lightmaps and shadows turned OFF.
Sound settings set to Low.

When I had lightmaps and shadows turned on, it was totally fvcked up. It looked like there were huge triangles taking up the whole screen and blocking my view.

I do wish I could crank up the settings because with everything on high and with AA and AF maxed, it sure looks beautiful. Unfortunately, I can't really live with 5 frames per second.

You guys were talking about being able to hide, but when I was playing, I kept finding enemies by just moving my crosshairs around an area until their name tags showed up. I assume enemy name tags is a server option. I really wish they would turn it off by default. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of having a jungle environment.

I didn't really think the choppers were much easier to fly than DC. A little different in terms of responsiveness, but really pretty similar. (at least with a joystick). One thing you don't want to do is point the nose at the ground because you will crash.

I've only played a few maps, but so far, my favorite thing in this game is the Phantom. OMG, napalm rules. The explosion and fire effects are very good and don't seem to cause any lag. Being on the receiving end is pretty cool too. It's rather frightening to see that ball of flames coming towards you. And the heatseeking missiles on the Phantom are very handy. I was having a great time downing Migs.

Is the sniper rifle one shot, one kill now...or do you still have to put 2 shots into the other person even though you shoot them in the head at point blank range?

played it. It's good, but frankly, no better than DC.

And I get annoyed by the music. It makes me wonder, in Vietnam, everytime a soldier got into a jeep, did he crank up the volume and start playing "A Poppa ooh Mow Mow"

headshots have always worked, thats what I do all the time with the egnineer rifle, who needs snipers when you have the same power but also have explosives and mines

Well that didn't answer my question at all. Yes, engineer rifles (shotguns in DC) are one shot, one kill when you are point blank, thats great. However, if you are far away shotguns are worthless. I just find it ridiculous that I have put a sniper rifle up to the back of one of my buddy's head and pulled the trigger and it only took off about half of his life. Two (head/body) shots per kill for a sniper definitely takes away the desire to play that type of unit.

no their are not one shot one kill weapons, only if you hit the head, the sniper rifles are exactly the same

and for sniping I prefeer the engineering rifle over the sniper rifle, alot more bullets and easier to aim because the sniper isnt effective unless you are reeeeeeeeeeeeallly far away and the target is standing still

I love this game! I never got into BF1942, but ever since I installed this last night I have been hooked.

It's really a different game than 1942. I started playing it like 1942 where standing still is a bad idea. But I kept getting owned by the guys who were hiding in the bushes. Once I slowed down and started doing more hiding and crouching, I did much better.

Did I mention that Claymores are really fun. I spent quite a bit of time just defending a flag by planting claymores, hiding, and waiting for the boom.

This is what a claymore does.

I just recently got the original BF1942, and all I can say is wow. I can't believe I waited this long to pick it up, and if you look around you could probably get it for $20. Well worth it in my opinion.

Oddly enough, I played RCTW:ET for a little while, but never liked it much.

Is there still a BF1942 server for AT or ATOT members?

That would be cool if there is, seeing as I will not be playing bfv untill they get some 9800 patches out. I "thought" I fixed it by reinstalling windows, but now I get lag again. Best 40 fps a second, 1024x768 highest settings, no aa or af.

Don't know much about real claymores.
In the game, they are anti-personnel mines that are detonated either when someone steps on them or when you equip your detonator and click the button.

The "jumpers" someone asked about are bouncing bettys. They are mines that shoot several feet into the air before detonating. The purpose of this is to cause death instead of simply blowing a leg off. Very nasty weapons.

I feel bad for you guys with 9800's. I hope they fix those issues soon. Sucks that you only get the same performance as I do with my GF3.

Got UT2k4 yesterday, and from what I'm reading in the reviews, BF:V is basically a mod put in a retail box...I'll still get it, but probably not til someone sports a "deal" on it to drop it down to $19.99

UT2k4 is a fricking blast though...I fully expect it to outdo any BF game in following by the end of the year, second only to Overrated-Life.

EDIT: From what I'm seeing in this thread, BF:V is a buggy release too...good thing I held off and went with the sure bet...
