Battlestar Galactica mini series ... addictive but disappointing...

I am a big Sci-Fi fan (Star Trek, Farscape, Stargate and more) and I was eagerly anticipating watching Battlestar Galacica and just finished watching the miniseries. I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed. Some things it does very very well, it's addictive and it does a great job of immersing the viewer in the action (you really feel like you are there). However some of the acting and directing just seemed way over the top. For example scene where they show a little girl playing aboard a ship that the Cylons are about to destroy (the way they switch back and forth between her, other cast members, and the cylons) was cringingly manipulative and sappy. Commander Adama's speech at the end about finding earth is another example, bad bad writing. Still it manages to hook me enough that I will definitely continue watching.

Can anyone tell me if this type of hamming continues though?

There are a few scenes/episodes (especially those in the latter half of season 2) that we could have done without, but on the whole, it's a great series. Definitely worth the watch.

Do you agree with me on the scenes I posted about in my original post? Just wondering so I can gauge if we are somewhat on the some level here.

And yes, the weak written episodes are frequent and not so far between at times. But the good episodes usually balance it out pretty well.

What really bugs me the most about the show is a stupid fashion "faux pas" I just cant seem to get over because it occurs in nearly every episode. Mens suits and TIES? Does anyone really think they would just randomly adapt such a stupid ass male fashion custom? Was the wardrobe department so strapped for funds they had to go shop at the Mens Warehouse for dress clothing for the men? Good fraking grief.

To be fair, the scene with the little girl was a sort of remake of an old Lyndon Johnson campaign ad that showed a little girl playing in a field followed by a nuclear explosion and mushroom cloud.

But yes there are some ongoing issues with the series, mainly with the dialog. Too much of Adama's dialog is tied up in big, important-sounding speeches. The worst part for me is the level of angst so many of the characters exhibit. But it's still a good story. Worth watching.

Hint: You should skip the episode "Black Market" in season 2. There might be a couple more you can skip. I don't remember specifically which ones. But you will only regret watching that one in particular.

What's wrong with suits and ties? They're trying to depict the BSG universe as being more tangible and familiar than Star Trek, where everyone wears either jumpsuits or dresses, and everything is futuristic looking. BSG incorporates a lot of soft, incandescent lighting, wood, brass, and other "old fashioned" looking things, but I think it helps rather than hurts the overall style. It also shows you that the humans are rooted in ancient culture, unlike Star Trek where they've largely moved on from the past and embraced everything new.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah I'd have to agree that the art style and incorporation of modern day clothing, furniture, props is one of the big pluses going for the show. I've seen few Sci-Fi series set in the future that manage to feel as realistic and familiar feeling as BSG seems to manage to be.

I watched ep1 of heroes and it just seemed stupid. I know it has gotten great reviews and stuff, but ep1 (started part of ep 2 but couldn't finish it) was just boring. Maybe I'm missing something.

BSG OTOH is great. Yeah you could skip a few ep's without missing any of the story, but it's still great. BSG is definitely worth a watch, and even those "bad eps" are kind of nice because they don't focus on the overall story but instead on some other thing (the boxing ep comes to mind). I am not saying that these filler ep's are good, but they are still worth watching.

Yeah some of it is over dramatic, but so what? You enjoyed the miniseries, so why not watch the rest of it?

BSG was great the first 2 seasons. Now I'm just watching it out of habit. Most of the eps now seem to be filler. I won't go into details since OPs still at the start.
