OK, they have faster than light travel, they have radio, they have video survalience, yet they don't have an analog type TV setup? I don't get it.

My guess is that since the Battlestars were designed to impervious to Cylons attacking computer networks and thus being able to control the ship, that what you are talking about would require more things to be linked together and making Galactica more susceptible.

/nerdy explanation

EDIT: I really have no idea, it just sounded like a good explanation.

Nah, it wouldn't, analog video really isn't much more complicated than radio. Considering we know they have video already (computers and such) it makes me wonder why they don't at least have wireless ship to ship video.

But adding video would require linking the communication to the ship's video display system. As it stands now all audio communication can be completely isolated from all other systems. To keep communication separate they'd have to either have separate video displays (waste of space) or have separate video inputs for the displays (added complexity).

Also, audio only communication requires far less bandwidth and would be less susceptible to jamming than audio+video. This could be why their wireless audio is always filled with static, they could be using a system that provides low-quality, high-reliability communication.

Heh.. Even Star Trek didn't have realtime video to an away team. In one episode, they made a big deal about tying into the feed from Geordi's visor.

The real answer is because the writers are idiots. Stargate SG-1 managed to get video through a freakin' stargate, fer chrissakes...

Why the hell do they need video communication anyway?

I mean.. when I talk on the cell phone, I sure as hell don't feel like holding a camera in front of me.. and when I talk on the phone at home, I sure as hell don't feel like being on video.

They did that more or less to see what the planet is like since they have it on that robot they send through.

I'd imagine that being a military vessel, they're trying to minimize bandwidth used locally. They do have television type transmissions, as shown in the vice-president episode, but, really, what's the point of having video? They're military, they need to communicate what's going on, a video of a pilot's face or the face of the commander of another ship doesn't really add any critical transmission, as information is conveyed by words anyway.

lol who knew? "Commander Adama has a shaving mirror in his cabin. This mirror is made by IKEA, and is a model called called "Frack", which is the primary vulgarity in the Battlestar Galactica universe.
" from the imdb trivia

OK, so they're skiddish about 2 way video communication (why it's worse than audio, I still don't understand), but they still could have 1-way analog transmissions, like TV. Remember, their ships are supposed to be grouped relatively closely together, that's why they're able to do realtime shortwave comm. Video takes no longer.

Star Trek had all their strange "Sub-light" communication junk. This would not apply here. Battlestar G's ships clearly aren't able to communicate to each other if they've "jumped" to another sector of space.
