posts like this is why I come to AT!!!

I had tried to pull Joseph Campbell out of my ass earlier and couldnt get it...

remember the episode where Sheridan gets interviewed by Jack the Ripper?

GREAT THEATER!!

I had to use google a lot right there.
Campbell... no idea who that was, wiki confirmed I indeed have no idea who this is.

Sheridan and Jack the Ripper? Well, google tells me that is Babylon 5.
That is a series I haven't watched yet.

I'm not actually a huge sci-fi type fan, Star Trek, old school Battlestar, and whatnot... never really watch.
What is B5 closer to, in terms of overall style?

Regardless, I am behind on a great many things to watch.
I just got around to watching the Farscape series straight-through about a year or so ago. Though I had watched it when it was airing live on Sci-fi growing up, or at least, I watched it for like a season or so... I enjoyed what I watched, but I had also missed a season or two I think, and not being able to kind of cue up things on demand like today (this was dial-up days for most people, including us), I just didn't come back to it. I'm glad though, because that show ultimately kicked ass, having watched during my senior year of college. Actually watched a few different awesome shows the past two years: Farscape, Firefly, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, BSG, Kings, and I'm sure I missed a one or two there. Oh, watched all of the past seasons of True Blood, and so ready for this next season to start.

So Farscape fans, I started watching it but the first three episodes (except for the first few minutes of the pilot where everything started) is just zzzzzz....

I really want to watch it though, so if I wanted to jump ahead, where should I go? Will I miss too much of the storyline if I just jumped straight to season one finale?

season 1 is short, and it picks up fairly rapidly as season 1 draws to a close... iirc
I'm pretty sure I enjoyed season 1, and I liked seeing how it all started... but I recognize the first handful of episodes were probably some of the slowest of the series. A couple points in season 3 are a little dull, but for the most part, seasons 2, 3 and 4 simply rock.

But of course, if you aren't the least bit interested in any of the characters as of yet, or what drives all of the civilizations... you might not like any of the show. It's definitely not one of the non-existent "absolutely everybody loves this" shows.

I haven't seen the new version, but the OLD version, "Mormons in Space" really turned me off on the whole series.

It's by far my favorite TV show. I thought the first season was good, but didn't pick up until the end (where it gets fantastic). I found seasons 2 and 3 to be the best, as they followed the trend that the end of season 1 started. 4 was more mixed in that it had some OK at best episodes and some absolutely incredible ones. The first half or so of season 4 is probably the weakest part of the entire series. To me, though, an "OK" episode of BSG is still excellent compared to a lot of TV shows.

I also found the ending to be pretty satisfying. It might not have been executed perfectly, and sometimes it felt like they weren't really sure how to end it. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed it more the second I watched the series completely through.

As a note, though, the show HEAVILY revolves around religion, mythology, God(s) or a higher power, etc. It is NOT a science fiction show, despite the setting. People bitch and moan that the show was too focused around religion and God near the end. However, having seen the series fully through twice and at least half way through 2 more times, it's blatantly obvious that the show is extremely focused around these concepts from the start. If you watch the show for what it really is, you'll see that the ending fits pretty well. This is not obvious for most first-time viewers.

For example, I watched it completely through my 2nd time with a friend. I told him exactly what I said above before we watched it. When we were done, he said he was thankful that I brought that up to him before hand. He said had I not, he probably wouldn't have enjoyed the show nearly as much as he did. It's one of those obvious if you know what you're looking for kind of things.

tl;dr - Watch it.

Firefly and Stargate: Universe were terrible shows.

Battlestar Galactica was one of the best shows ever.

based on your taste, I can only assume that you'd hate BSG.

I don't think Stargate is my thing (haven't given it a serious chance, I admit), but I love Firefly (and Dollhouse), and absolutely love BSG.

I just started Stargate: SG1 .. the first 45 mins were pretty meh.. but I'm getting a bit more into it... then bam.. full frontal top/bottom female nudity? Not that I don't enjoy it .. but that seems rather random?

I agree with silverpig. The miniseries and the first two seasons were excellent, after that the show rapidly went downhill.

BoomerD: The new show is VERY different from the cheesy original series.

It peaks near the end of the second season and goes downhill from there. The ending is crap.

This. I really enjoyed the show and then it just started disappointing me. I could no longer suspend disbelief when several main characters
turn out to be Cylons and apparently have been the entire time
... well you'll see. It just got ridiculous, like the writers were grabbing at straws.

Battlestar Galactica: excellent mini series, very good season 1, good season 2, season 3 is bad, and season 4 was okay. I think people focus too much on the ending, which I think was fine. It's season 3 that bothered me more than anything; for a long time it seemed like the main plot was derailed.

I couldn't finish Farscape, I think I stopped sometime in Season 3. The show was decent, but I wasn't a fan of the writing for a lot of the episodes.

Stargate Universe is terrible, I think I got through maybe half of season 1 before giving up. I can't watch a show for that long if I hate all the main characters.

I was rewatching the series a couple of weeks ago, and that startled me as well. I think the pilot was meant for some premium cable channel (like HBO) where it's almost a mandate to show nudity at some point. You never see nudity again in the series.

The show is good, but you get the feeling that show is dragging on too long in the later seasons. It was a bit refreshing when they launched Atlantis (also good) which I think they ended appropriately, and didn't drag on forever like SG-1.

Bsg is probably the best show on tv thus far. The second half of season 2 is weak, and half of season 3 is weak due to the network pushing stand alones, but the plot and acting is the best you'll see. Farscape is number 2 for me but I always recommend the pilot followed by skipping to episode 16 and finishing season 1. It picks up by season 2. Ds9 is ranked 3rd but you should skip til the last episode of season 1 and it gradually gets better until the amazing 4-7.

Babylon 5 is absolute trash with the worst acting and writing you will ever see. Deus ex machina on every episode and plotlines.

It depends upon the person. Some will expect more as critics have widely rained down praise on the show.

Go for it.

Don't forget to start with the mini-series.

If you're confused by this like I was, Netflix has the miniseries as the first two episodes of Season 1. They're labeled as such if you accessed the series via the Netflix web interface, but NOT labeled that way if you got to it via xbox 360.

It's quite funny to see the differing viewpoints in this thread. I love B5 and thought BSG was junk starting at season 2. The miniseries and season 1 were good though.

BSG is better than all the ones you listed

I wouldn't say it's better than SCC, but BSG certinaly..."doesn't suck."

there's some cheese and some bad acting from time to time, and some repetitive, unnecessary plotlines, but overall it's pretty good.

I just got to season 4 on Netflix.

well, you would like this one, b/c the Mormons are the evil robots trying to force their monotheism on the humans while chasing them across the galaxy in an effort to exterminate them.

Wait until you finish season 4, then you will understand.

And you will not be pleased.

I'm trying to rewatch Babylon 5 and I'm having trouble because it's so cheesy. I'm skipping some episodes in season 1 and hopefully season 2 picks up a bit.

I watched the whole thing years ago and enjoyed it, though I remember season 1 being bad back then too.

I felt like they pretty clearly explain why this happened, as in such a way that it sounded like a logical thing to happen. I thought it was interesting!

I was just slightly disappointed that they made Cavil the "main" antagonist of the show. I didn't find that 100% believable.

Well, I'm pretty sure I know where this is heading, and it isn't unique, really--or shocking in where the story has been going from the beginning.

The benefit of watching several seasons in the time of a few weeks is that you can see that the story is more cohesive than a lot of the long-time fans want to admit.
