what are the symptoms? thanks in advance!!!
Sx of a corneal ulcer:
Redness, light senstivity, eyelid swelling, discharge, pain , loss of vision
Fungal infections are rare but are not uncommonly seen in FL....in my training it was always high on our differential dx of any corneal infection, especially in a contact lens wearer
Fusarium is the most common fungal organism we see in SE US...fungal infection are often misdiagnosed which delays the diagnosis and therefore reduces successful treatments
You would be amazed at what patients do with threr contacts and how often patients exhibit horrible hygiene
One of my colleagues had a patient that routinely lubricated there contacts in their
MOUTH
I recently had a patient who had an old pair of contacts sitting in case for months, did not clean them and placed the lens in her eyes
The solutions can be contaminated with bacteria, fungi, amoebic organisms(these are devastating infections in general) and when placed in an eye with a contact..the contact abrades the corneal surface increasing the likiehood the organism can penetrate the cornea and lead to an infection
Please remember a contact is a foreign substance that must be care for correctly..personally ...contacts should not be left in overnight ..there is 9x increased risk of infection...I would never do this and tell my patients not to as well
