I was at the local bestbuy and saw the Toshiba 1415-S173 for 709 After Rebate. I'll be dammed this is basically about the same price I got mine for over the holidays. It was 949-240 in rebates. I did not have time to ask how the rebates broken down work though. Possible hotter deal if the $240 does not include the extra $50 off from Toshiba.

BTW This deal ends on Feb 8. 2003. BB online has no mention of this deal.

I saw this in the store , but they were sold out.

The guy didn't know how many rebates.
But confirmed it wasn't an MSN rebate or anything.

He gave me a spec sheet.

Intel Celeron 1.8 ghz
256mb SDRam
15" TFT display
30 gb harddrive
DVD/CDRW drive
nVidia Geforce 420 16mb video memory /w TV out
10/100 LAN
56K modem

Weight 7.8 lbs.

I might see if he can give me the floor model for cheaper if they don't get anymore in before the sale expires (2/8)

Just came back from Best Buy.

$949 - $190 Price Match Rebate from Best Buy - $50 Toshiba Rebate = $709

None in stock in Central Florida.

Update! As of 9 PM Tuesday there is one at the Waterford Lakes store in Orlando.

Are there any 10% off coupons floating around in this months Magazines?

I just called the BB near me and was told it was $950 with $240 in rebates, he said the price just changed today or they added another rebate.

How do you like this laptop so far? How nice is the LCD screen?

It's a great laptop. The screen is nice. Maybe a bit big for some people but with the Geforce 4 and the big screen, it can decently play some games. I have had no problems. This price again is even making me jealous cause it is such a good deal!

Thanks! A similar Dell laptop would run at least $1000, I had better jump on this one.
One more this how long does the battery last and is it a Li-Ion?

I just used my Toshiba 1115-S123 on battery for the first time and it lasted just shy of 3 hours.

The battery is Lion, lasts about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. If you want you can forfeit the extra $50 off and get a free battery from Toshiba. Thats what I did. Overall you cannot beat this deal. The only downside is that it comes with Windows XP Home image rather than the setup. besides that this appears to be pretty legit. The deal over the holidays incurred sending multiple rebates in which may or may not qualify

Are you serious ?

It weighs 8 pounds and the battery lasts only 1 1/2 hours ?

That is so low. Are you sure yours is not messed up?

I was thinking at least 2 to 3 hours.. anyone got the battery specs ?

Yep, weak battery

Battery Pack: 9-cell, rechargeable, removable Li-Ion battery,
10.8V x 4500mAh = 48.6Wh

more specs

EDIT: Noticed the spec sheet said 2.5 hours battery life.. that sounds more like it.,

I was able to put S173 in the search and it brought it up, but for $1138.00 before a $50 rebate.
Where did you get the other rebates?

What would be a strong battery for a laptop then?

At least 14v

In this comparison, a Gateway has a 2ghz proc (Pentium 4) and a battery life of 3 hours, 45 minutes. Maybe the Celeron uses more power, but
a Dell with the same processor as the Toshiba, 1.8 Celeron, runs for 2 hours, 40 minutes.

60 to 90 minutes, like dealmaker said, is very low

Not really sure what it is. The store I went to only had the floor demo and there
was no price tag. Clerk checked in a computer system for rebates. He found
two. On his system it said something about price match. He also printed
the rebate forms for me. This same description was not on the form.

I called all the stores in Orlando a second time around 8:00 PM just on the off chance
that I had gottem a busy (lazy ;-) sales rep somewhere the first time. Low and behold,
the Waterford Lakes store had two. I said "had" two, because I now have one.
I left the store about closing time and the second is still there waiting for
some AnandTech reader to snap it up in the morning.

I have this laptop and think its GREAT. I got a mini pci wifi card on Ebay for $60, and I'll be getting another 256mb DDR pc2100 ram at some point, but so far I am loving it. I had an HP 1210 that I sold to get this S173, and my out of pocket cost was really low, and wow is this laptop a TON better than the HP.

HP gave me about 400 3dmarks due to integrated crappy video.
This S173 gives me nearly 4200 3dmarks. See link. There is no comparison between the two laptops, the S173 is superior by far.

The 15 inch screen is great. I have a single pixel that seems stuck but don't notice it much. The Cel 1.8ghz is great for everything I do on a laptop, which includes some gaming though not a lot. The video card is very nice and capable for average gaming. I primarily use the laptop for web surfing and programming.

One thing I will say -- there seems to be a bug of some kind with the keyboard in Linux. It has to do with the interrupts or something. I have found quite a few comments online about this issue and tried some of the solutions offered but none were perfect. It seems like Linux catches a double key input frequently from the keyboard, so when you hit A you get AA. It is extremely!! annoying so I don't know if I would suggest this machine (or any other Toshiba?) if you will only run Linux on it. But it is ok for dual boot and of course great for Windows. I hope Toshiba fixes this keyboard issue somehow, and makes a fix available on their site, but I'm not holding my breath.

As for the battery... I generally only use the laptop without power for 1hr max, though one time I ran it up to just about 2hrs and then it just suddenly blinked off heh. Just now, I pulled the plug on my laptop and it reports 100% battery remaining, approx 1hr 45mins. So I think 1.5-2hrs is about all you will get, which is ok by me.

Great deal, go for it if you can find it...

From my experience with this notebook. Go and Get one Now! This is a good lappy. You really can't beat the price unless you wait till the 3 ghz machines are out. Man, having a lappy is so kewl. Talk about bringing everything with you. You can trunk all of your stuff around, and play games. Divx runs smooth on this thing. I love the fact you can bring along some speakers and output the video to a tv. Battery life of course could be better however i do not use all of that toshiba battery management progs. Might run longer if you have that stuff on. It is a bit big but hey, you got a 15inch screen and a floppy drive built right in. Good deal. Go get one
