Student loan forgiveness isn't expiring because it was never granted. People are going to have to start making payments again because loan forbearance is slated to end.

Manchin thinks the CTC is inflationary plus (and probably more importantly to him) is morally bad because, I guess, kids won't get jobs and it reduces poverty too much.

Manchin is delusional: striving for some Senate of old operating under "regular order", where people could work together and pass legislation. But he won't kill the fillibuster, which is directly impeding this vision of "regular order". So if anyone wants to get any legislation passed, it needs to be crammed into some must-pass omnibus bill or done via the reconciliation process.

When my nephew voted for Biden because he thought his student loans would be forgiven, I told him not to trust everything a politician says. Now he's pissed.

If your nephew voted for Biden thinking his loans would be forgiven, then he is an idiot, since Biden didn't campaign on blanket loan forgiveness.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of him. He's got his BA, but hates capitalism and has worked for the last two years driving uber eats and door dash. Will be turning 26 and still has no real jobs on his resume. Still lives with mommy, plays video games most days, only working when he needs money to pay his credit cards. Total failure to launch.

I mean, getting that first job can be difficult, but with a BA, should be able to find something. He's definitely going to want something to pay for health insurance if he's turning 26 and will be subsequently kicked off his parents' insurance.

Unless he subscribes to some idea of just wanting to do nothing:

Edit: Mixed signals, misdirection, and confusion, per the usual.

Manchin is saying he wants to cut the child tax credit completely, meanwhile student loan forbearance (corrected from forgiveness) is about to expire.

Throw him out of the party, he's clearly not a part of it anyway and without him and Sinema at least the talking point "you have the majority and you let all the voters down with your lies" will be gone.

That talking point will cost a lot of votes by 2022.

Throwing him out of the party is about the stupidest thing you could do. Have fun with Senate Majority Mitch McConnell with that move.

Just agree to the $400b in clean energy infrastructure and call it a day. Last time that happened, with Obama's stimulus bill, they spent a fraction of that and it caused a huge growth vector in solar and wind.

Many still think that way; things must change or we are doomed.

Manchin holding things up because he he wants to revert to the original pre 2021 setup and not turn the extended credit into a long term thing

Until the pandemic relief measure was enacted, a family with less than $2,500 in earned income did not qualify for the child tax credit, and a single parent with two children earning between $2,500 and $30,000 received only a partial credit, according to the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The credit was a maximum of $2,000 for each child up to age 17.

Bruce Meyer, an economist with the University of Chicago, said it won't take long for the employment impact to be felt.
Some 1.5 million workers -- 2.6% of all working parents -- would exit the labor force within two years if the enhanced credit is extended, he said. Most of them would be at the lower end of the income scale.
Prior to the boost, the child tax credit rewarded work -- effectively giving a $2 increase after taxes to the wages of a single parent with two kids making $15 an hour, he said.
