BBC- Israel Raid into Gaza

Hi,

This is the link to the article.

Sometimes I wonder.

Admittedly both sides have unsavoury traits to say the least, but I don't remember British tanks going round blowing holes in houses in N. Ireland. Dirty tactics were most definitely employed (don't get me wrong) - but I find it difficult to comprehend the willingness the Israeli army has to again and again potentially put innocents in the firing line (and often resulting, as in the above article, with many deaths).

Thoughts?

I didn't read the entire article so might not have noticed any mention of the homicide bombing which took place in Tel Aviv before the roadmap was released. A convenient omission?
It's very simple. Either the new Palestinian PM is going to get control of Hamas, Hezbula and Islamic Jihad or he isn't. If he does then peace has a chance if he doesn't then the Israeli's will continue to go after those responsible for the bombing.

Link has been updated. Now contains this quote:

Hours before publication of the "roadmap", a suicide bomber blew himself up at a Tel Aviv cafe killing three people and injuring at least 50.

He was sworn in a day or two ago, how is he supposed to do anything yet? They should atleast suspend the raids and give him a chance.

A result of the incursion

As far as I can tell Israel has been reacting to homicide bombings on it's people.
Yes, the PM has only been in power for a short time and I will give him a chance to clean things up. If he's as good as his word the we should see the palestinians themselves start cracking down on the terrorists. If the palestinians can't stop the bombings then the new PM isn't any better than Arafat and the peace process becomes a joke.

You can't expect Israel to sit back and take it when the palestinian leadership won't lift a finger to stop the bombings.

What can they possibly do if they wanted to? Their entire security infrastructure has been decimated by the Isreali's. They have condemed suicide (or homicide as FOX and viewers like to call them) bombings infinite times but all the militant groups have vowed to continue attacking. They don't have the presonnel or the equipment to do a thing, besides, the terrorits groups are much better armed than they are anyway. If Israel is doing what it is doing to protect itself and its people maybe they should dismantle their ILLEGAL settlements and end their 35 year old ILLEGAL occupation of Palestinian lands. Try getting Sharon to do that. Besides, we pay for the construction of settlements anyhow. A huge chunk of the ridiculous sum of money we give them each year goes to maintaining and expanding settlements. If we needed Israel as a stronghold in the ME, we don't anymore now that we have complete control of Afghanistan and Iraq. I for one am sick of seeing hatred towards the US caused by our involvement with Israel.

According to the palestinian authority they have "thousands" of police and security forces ready to go. The Israeli's haven't been going after the palestinian security forces, they've been going after members of Hezbula, etc....We'll see if this supposed change in leadership accomplishes anything. I suspect that very quickly after the new PM starts going after the terrorists he'll end up dead, Arafat will jump in to "save" the palestinian people and around we go again.

Arafat is a terrorist, always has been a terrorist, always will be a terrorist.
The one thing he won't ever give up is power and the only way for him to stay in power is to keep the conflict going.
I give the new palestinian PM about 6 months. I hope he's got his affairs in order.

Really? I've never heard of this. I'm not saying your wrong, just that this is not how I understood it to be. Do you have any links?

Frankly, I'm about half convinced that the Palestinian's(and probably all Arabs) intention is still to destroy Israel. I expect they might intend to do so if it takes 2000 years.

It's a completely irrational goal, but if it is true we just have to live with it. For 2000 years if necessary.

His approval rating is at 2%. 6 months may be too much.

Ahhh...the latest Fox News catch phrase...

when your intent is to maximize civilian casualties, it fits.

Well, suicide bombing seemed to be an acceptable term for all the years before Fox news, but whatever. A person straps explosive to themselves, walks into a populated area, and dentonates said explosive, killing himself or herself. Sucide bombing seems to be appropiate term to me. When I think homicide bombing, I picture someone planting explosives to kill people, and dentonating it after he/she has left...but it's all semantics I guess. I guess my point is....what was the problem with the term we have been using for years? Did we really need a new "catch phrase" for it? Were people misunderstanding what a sucide bombing was?

No, its just another way FOX wins over the uber conservative, it sounds more shocking and makes the enemy look all the more evil. It's BS, and I agree with you, when I think "homicide bombing" I think planting a bomb, but I guess it has a much more sensationalistic effect than "suicide", especially when incessantly repeated by people like that dumb blond biacth on Fox and Friends trying desperatly to make sense every morning of the evil Arab hethens.
