That's a cop-out. If the spread offense lets a team with a weaker offense be more productive, it should also let a team with a potent offense be similarly more productive. It's within the rules of the game and it works for a lot of teams.
I'm no happier than you are to see OSU going up against LSU (I would have much rather seen OSU play in the Rose Bowl and have a shot at winning), but
I'm not about to take anything away from LSU by claiming that the spread offense is covering up some sort of ineptitude. The simple fact is that the spread works and it's 100% within the rules of football.
You might as well claim that the forward pass is just a way to get away with a lot of things and cover up the fact that the offense can't get the job done by going at the game straight (that is, by running the ball).
