Be careful ordering CPUs from Amazon

A friend ordered a 4790 a couple days ago and got a [FONT=&quot]Core Duo E6558 with a 4790 sticker on it. Called Amazon and they shipped out another one and this one was another fake with the sticker on it, but it was really an E7600. Not sure exactly which warehouse they are shipping from, but they are being delivered to the Indianapolis area.

[FONT=&quot]The first one he tr[FONT=&quot]i[FONT=&quot]ed to install to his new motherboard socket, and it almost fit - and he said that if he put some pressure to it, the lid probably would have closed. Always check the seller. Amazon has a lot of third party scammers selling through their marketplace. That's why I only but from Amazon and Newegg direct, never a reseller. I bet your friend thought he was getting an amazing deal. If you see one seller selling something much less than everyone else, likely a scam.

Was this Amazon itself or one of their sellers. I've had no problems buying CPUs from them.

Our store has bought hundreds of Intel and AMD cpu's over the years from Amazon and have never had a problem. This has to be an isolated case. And like the others have said, was this sold BY Amazon or Fullfilled by Amazon (third-party seller).

Indeed, it was Amazon - not a reseller. Both came from the Whitestown, Indiana distribution facility. He dug into it a little and the returns go through Lexington, Ky. Not sure if all of the midwest goes through there, or just parts.

I visited the User Control Panel, per the instructions - I can't find the 'Pictures & Albums' link. This method of adding a photo is waaaaaaay too complicated. I am out of time and patience. So if anyone wants to see the pic - just PM me and I will be happy to send it.

I thought there was some crazy small stuff written on the socket side.

Or you could throw it in a s775 system and see what shows up.

I'm wary of third party sellers on Amazon (same goes for Newegg), I try to buy directly from Amazon if I can but there's a couple computer shops (Memory House or such local stores) I'd also buy from through Amazon.

The silkscreened text seems overly dark/intense, but I guess that's because it's a totally fake sticker and not actually imprinted directly onto the metal IHS.

They do. My new 6600K is made in Vietnam. And it's real.
