just out of curiosity, why did you refuse the surgery? i got fusion on my back and it was the best thing ever. i'm not gonna lie, the recovery period is incredibly painful, but the worst of it is over after about 2 weeks.

To OP, Day 18, keep it going!

Nanaki... refused surgery due to doctor giving equal odds on 1)getting better, 2)getting worse, 3)no change.

I ended up going through Cox Distraction for 2-3 months and epidural injections (which hurt like heck).

I still feel it 3 years later, but I'm 95% recovered. I don't think I'll ever get that last 5% back!

I've got Lorcets (just another brand of lortab) for my migraines, and it's pretty amazing going from crippled to not being in pain. I don't really get a high from them though, but I try to avoid taking more than one a week since I still worry about getting addicted to them.

Hang in there! You're doing a great job so far -- enjoy spending time w/ your daughter and other family members and friends. Get outside for some fresh air -- go fishing, golfing or a nice walk -- something that's relaxing. Congrat's on your progress!

I know what you are going through. Last year I had to get off them before a surgery I had done for my lower back. Was on not just them but also muscle relaxers. I had to be off them 2 weeks before my surgery. The withdrawl was so bad I refused to take them after my surgery in fear of getting stuck on them again.

I love it now how clear my head is all the time. I hated that cloudy feeling and all the other crap that came along with it.

From what I've seen lately, this is probably one of the more positive threads on the forum. So yeah, gloat away man. It's tough to kick an addiction. I think those of us who have had to take them and didn't get addicted were so damn terrified of the pills that we stopped them before we maybe should have.

I can relate somewhat. I didn't suffer the mental addiction that you did, I think because I was only on them for 2 months. But I definitely felt the physical withdrawals when I stopped taking them. I got vicodin ES before my knee surgery and percocet after. Spent 2 months on percocet while in rehab and then when I ran out I used the leftover vicodin to ween myself. If I could have easily gotten more, like just go to the store and buy them off the shelf, I'd still be taking them. It was the fact that I had to ask my doctor every time I needed a refill that kept me from getting more... I ran out of percocet on a Friday afternoon and decided I'd just wait until Monday to get a refill. By Saturday afternoon I was having some minor cold sweats, couldn't sit still, diarrhea, etc. Then I realized I had to stop taking them and broke out the vicodin to ween myself off.

ever thought about recovery? it's pretty impressive you made it a month, but most addicts end up back on their drug of choice eventually.

I agree you should be careful with those pills but I see no harm in messing around with them every once and awhile. Sure if you keep taking them like an addict that will cause problems but it is all about balance. Research + Knowing your limits + being self assured will go a long ways.

With smokes it was like this. Smoking is way more addictive in my experience and you get addicted much quicker. By addicted I mean you feel withdrawls much sooner with smoking.

Ive gone from being a pack a day smoker to quitting cold turkey the next day with no problems other than a headache. It isn't fun but anyone can do it.

Most of this is I expermented with this stuff at a young age so the physical effects are much sooner gone because of the extremely fast metabolism I had.

Opiates can own your ass in a heartbeat. It has nothing to do with knowledge, attitude or, metabolism. You slip and you're down for the count. There is no fail safe. Some folks do not have a predilection for addiction. Opiates don't care. Use them long enough and often enough and you WILL become addicted.

Being addicted isn't the end of the world because you can get better. I do not hold with the AA folks who believe once an alcoholic always an alcoholic because, man has free will. The odds are stacked against those with drug problems without a doubt but, they are not insurmountable.

Ya its just as easy to get addicted to opiods and it is smoking. If you take 3 tabs a day for a week you are addicted even if its a small amount. If you take 3 a day for a month you will have a much stronger addiction. Usually you get depressed bad. Its because your body stops producing its own endorphins and gets used to the synthetic opiods. It takes time to start reproducing your own. I would much rather be addicted to cig then opiods.
