People thats why you get the house inspected and make them a offer according to what the inspector finds. If the pipes need to be replace or there is lead or asbestos bring that up and make your offer

What if it's already included in the price? Plus, I'd have to pay for the inspections, and then wait for them to fix it.

I'll tell ya a secret:

All houses 30 minutes (country drive) from the stores you need are in this price range.

This is NOT HOT .

Glad you like your house though. Move to general forum.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of living in the country cause a 30 min drive could mean 25 miles away but 3k sq ft for $50k is outrageous. We are talking about $450k for that kind of house in Michigan.

Yeah, wth.... I'm living about 45 minutes from downtown Minneapolis... I don't know of any houses here or even an hour further that are this cheap...

We filter water, not to get rid of the lead, but to get rid of the clorine. I understand that in the larger cities they even use ammonia now to kill bacteria. That must taste worse even! After years of living overseas where you had to purify your own water, the taste of clorine in the States is awful! That and the suspicion that it kills the good bacteria that resides in the human stomach to aid digestion. We distill water for coffee and tea too. That is to remove minerals that would deposit in the coffee and tea makers. Makes them last a lot longer and require minimal maintenance.

Actually, I don't know of any place where lead pipes have been used in at least the last hundred years. Galvanized iron was used in the fifties and the worst that does is to corrode on the inside and add iron to your diet. The danger of lead is up north where they ysed lead soldered copper pipes for supply plumbing. Now, they solder copper potable water supply lines with a material that does not contain lead.

Sat-$80
Phone_$20
Insurance-$50
Internet-$35
Total output per month-$985 on the high side for a family of 4 in this huge house

Sounds nice.

What about property taxes?

What about car maint? Car insurance?

Owning a house is expensive got to take some money out for painting and upkeep... Gas for the mower... ChainSaw, Weedeater...Etc...etc...

What about medical bills? And health insurance?

How about a clothing allowance?

Biggest bill I see you have is besides food and power/water util bills is Sat TV bill...

Hmmm, I guess getting a paycheck from a dissability would be nice since you wouldn't have to work at wall mart or drive 40 minutes each way to work... 1.5 hours round trip not to mention fuel cost and car cost. Better get a honda I guess.

I'd think twice about moving to a town like this. Unless you like working at gas stations and wall marts. I doubt I would fit in very well, and you would see a lot of very odd stuff if you didn't just have a paycheck comming in and had to go out and do a 40hour week job.

I looked at a small town like this and could not swallow the mental change.

I agree. I can't imagine the neighbors in that area with the other $30k houses. Chances are that the people living around you are not educated and all the stereotypes from Jeff Foxworthy videos ring true. I know someone that lives out in the country in southern OH and the only store around the town was a gas station and the walmart was a 40 min drive. Basically, you were out of luck of finding a good job unless you drove 50 miles each way. He didn't care because he was on a fixed military retirement income and that was one of the only places where he could afford to retire. Chances are that this town in TN is not for most us who are young professionals (engineers, lawyers) but it could be good for someone with a high school degree that works at walmart that pays rent each month. But their are places in bigger cities down south that offer very nice homes for $200k down there so people should consider those.

Like me Lol, my mom was yelling at me again yesterday and she said I better start looking for an apartment, and I was like "I found a house for $30K, so the monthly payments are less than rent would be", and she just left.

Dude. I grew up in San Diego and live in SF as well. I completely and utterly agree with you. First let me say I'm not white. I think you white folk have been rolling over too much and letting people walk all over you over the racist thing. I've personally have experienced a lot of racism from whites but I've seen a lot of racism against whites. I've been in a lot of situations when a black dude has been unbelievably racist against a bunch of white dudes and the white dudes just stand around like admonished children. It's the guilt thing. I step in and speak up that it's crap. There's always one or two white dudes that come up to me afterwards to thank me since they can't get away with speaking up.

I find all forms of racism untolerable from any group of people against any other. Some groups think it's OK to be racists just because they've been victims of it in the past. That's crap.

Back to the topic at hand. Would it be possible to rent out a house in Dyer/Trenton. I'm even thinking of buying the pretty nice looking ones for 80-90K. I could cover the mortgage swapping out top raman for happy meals every month.

I grew up in San Diego and live in the SF East Bay. In general, the San Francisco Bay Area sucks as a place to live. San Diego is nice but has the worst housing prices in the country so the option is not their to move back. I'm white and I take BART into downtown Oakland to work. One time, on a rush hour train (so standing room only) there was a black kid lying on the seats. Well I tapped on his shoulder and asked him to move. Well some black woman, who didnt even know the kid, unloaded on me. I didnt feel like putting up w/ it so I got into a arguement w/ her, quite loud in fact. I basically got her to admit that the only reason she went after me was because I was white. This isn't the first time that i've seen or been in situations where blacks have been racists to whites.

So, who has more racism now?

The fact is there is racism from every one now. Asians against blacks and hispanics, whites against blacks and hispanics, blacks agains white and hispanics, hispanics against blacks and whites. This doesnt excuse it, just points out that the Klan may be in TN but be a white person walking through Compton or Richmond or Bayview/HuntersPoint and you will see the exact same attitude, just without the sheets and a different color'd skin.

On a additional note, a PM for my company just moved from somewhere outside Oakridge TN to Bellingham WA. Apparently he is VERY liberal and could not standliving around so many conservatives and/or religious folks. Amazing how someone whos viewpoint is supposed to represent tolerance becomes intolerant of his neighbors.

Yes, Tennessee does suck. In fact it "sucked" the national headquarters of Nissan right out of Lotus land, ditto with Asurion Corp. Let's see, Louisiana Pacific from Oregon, Caremark, Clarcor. Yes, Tennessee is an awful place to live. It would be best if the rest of you just stayed in place. It is already getting too crowded here. By the way funboy42, welcome to this awful state.

Some things to keep in mind in this day and age -
Despite what we nerds and geeks think a lot of business is still done face to face.
Most major urban centers in the US are hubs of high paying employment.
Most of the East has a LOT of black fiber layed during the dot.com boom to connect these uban centers, plus there is satellite net.
As fuel prices rise we are starting to transition to more "e-meetings" (VTC, LiveMeeting, etc) and telecommuting.
In a five to ten years I expect more employers will be satisfied with hard working employees who live close enough to come to work once or twice a month and work on the net the rest of the time.
Thus land in the boonies with GOOD net access may soon meet the LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION mantra.
I know my 150 acres east of Huntsville has black fiber at the road.

WOW!!! those are the cheapest home prices I've ever seen!

It would literally cost 10 times as much to buy a similar 4br/2 bath house here in Cumberland County, Maine. And it isn't all that great here, I live 45 minutes away from the nearest city center/mall/bestbuy/curcuit city. Maine's housing market SUCKS!!!

It only sucks if you are a buyer. If you had bought in 20 years ago it might look great now. You could sell your house and buy the similar one in Tennessee and have 80% of your money left over. That's why you need to determine if it's worthwhile to buy in. What's it going to look like 20 years from now?
The USA puts a LOT of tax breaks into owning a home - which might be taken away. I was looking forward to the $500K no tax on sale clause - but now it looks like I'm going to have to buy something for $250K and use that tax break.

that area is cheap compared to many places. for example, comparing the house prices in orange county, to johnson county in kansas (they claim it's the second richest county in the nation) you can pick up a really really really nice place for about $250k. for about 500k, the price of a 2 motorcycle shed here, you could pick up a palacial residence there, full with two spiral staircases with lots and lots of nicely landscaped land. might even get a pond in the yard.

No offense to Tennessee, but it didn't take much to 'suck' Louisiana-Pacific out of Oregon once they'd cut down all of the trees here that they could. Actually, all of the big lumber concerns moved to the south a long time ago...they got all pissed off because Oregon wouldn't let them cut down every last tree in the state so that they could make a buck selling 2x4's.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the lumber industry...in fact, my father worked in it for 40+ years. I'm just saying that you shouldn't make it out to be a big deal that LP moved to Tennessee, it was just a move to greener pastures.

You don't have to do that...just fly a Confederate flag. Everybody will know that you are probably drunk at any given time and that you own many guns. No need for an alarm system once you're flying the colors. (Stolen from Adam Carolla, BTW.)

Seriously, I've lived in those small towns and there's a reason nobody locks their doors. They don't have to. Sure, some a-hole can walk in and take your stuff. But if they try it, it is likely that one of your neighbors will call the cops. People watching out for people is far better policing than cops driving around on patrol.

i honestly wish there was a strict enforcement of the luser thread crapping. this started out as a a good deal about housing, i don't know why the hell anyone's personal information came into play. i can understand concerns about the livability of an area, but what does anyone's personal life and how they function have to do anything with an area for living or investment?

thanks for letting us know about housing prices in TN. as for the a$$hat who started with the crap, please go run on the freeway... in opposing traffic.
