I would honestly remove a reference to your previous residence at the trailer park in the pictures in your signature

Why it shows where we lived at pryor to where we are at now and I am proud of getting out of that sh1t hole. It will also show hope to others they can do the same as we did and NOT have to settle for a run down POS trailer to live in if you dont make alot of money. We went from a 7 bedroom 2 bath home to the crappy trailer to the home we got now. I felt I did a damn good job.

And if it wasnt for my back settlement and my MIL who has been living here for 6-7 years always telling me homes were cheap I would never of found this place. I would of bought yet another trailer in another city. You wont find a home in these prices in the community we live in anywhere else. I looked for 3 years waiting on my settlement to come through at other homes and with what we had to spend and not owe on any morgage. It was going to be a double wide on a piece of land. So real props goes to my MIL for hounding on me to look here and finnaly did to see she knew of the hot deals here.

that house looks like the ones in Amyville Horror but I do admit its really dirt cheap houses there. People in those areas are laid back and relaxed, not like here in the bay area where we all work for our house (sad but true)

aside from the people using this as an opportunity to brag about their houses...

this has been a good thread to show what else is out there. if i didn't have so much family where i am, i'd be very tempted to check out TN.

Whoa, unbelievably cheap.

Is there a site anywhere that lets you do a nationwide search based on house size, baths, bedrooms, etc? Like the one on realtor.com, but on a larger scale than just by zip code or city/state.

Well I know based on what I looked at before I bought mine that the same size house and land we have now would vetch over $500K in the hammond/Chicago area easily. My brother wo lives in LA told me mine would fetch well over that in his area. Hence another reaon I couldnt pass it up and left my brother back in IL. Family members close is great but when you have your own family and want the best for them you have to make a decision based on whats good for yours. I can visit my brother anytime I want (its a 6 hour drive) but for what I bought and the area I bought in is what I felt what my children and wife desierved after the years of hell we went through.

It sure beats the hell out of living in a trailer new or used and my kids are having a blast playing in the huge back yard. I would believe anyone that took the jump to here woudl feel the same and with houses as low as they are and all the construction going on around my town it wont be long that I will end up with a home when I plan on retiring will have the equity in it to do what ever I need to do to take care of my wife and I for the rest of our lives.

When the kids leave to do what they need to do were going to sell the house (it will be too much for us at that point) and buy a motor home and travel the US and vist our family members all across the nation
Then go die down in FL

Insanely low prices. Almost want to just buy 4 of 'em just to know they're there. So freakin cheap!

You beat me to it. I was thinking the same thing.

As for the middle of knowwhere. Not really. Most stores and what you need is 30 minute drive doing the speed limit.

I'll tell ya a secret:

All houses 30 minutes (country drive) from the stores you need are in this price range.

This is NOT HOT .

Glad you like your house though. Move to general forum.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of living in the country cause a 30 min drive could mean 25 miles away but 3k sq ft for $50k is outrageous. We are talking about $450k for that kind of house in Michigan.

Well that happends to be the closest big store near us. It has its downs but a major up mainly for my boys. Kinda hard to get picked on about the clothes you wear when EVERYONE is wearing the same clothes from the same store. Since moving here and going to school my son has not gotten into any argument about his cheap no name wear .
And not just any kind of walmart but our pick of 2 super walmarts

And I assume driving 30 minutes in traffic to do 5 miles is supposed to be better? Personnaly I like doing 30 minutes to do 25 miles and see rolling hills, farm animals, and nice homes then to sit in traffic smelling smog getting pissed at the person in front of me like I used to. WAY less stress on me. I havent been this happy of a person in a very long time. OH and lets not also forget cleaner air and I havent see as many stars in my life not haivng any city light to ruin the eye candy up there Oh and then the wild birds. Blue jays, Cardnials, doves, owls, several versions of woodpeckers, hawks to name a few my kids and I have had the pleasure of seeing out in our yard. Yeah county living sucks ass and NO one should ever have to put up with this much peace of mind and serenity ever.

It is primitive down here in the south, but we manage, somehow, to survive. One interesting issue here in N. Alabama is that really good restaurants just can't seem to survive in great numbers. In the cities, a meal in a restaurant that takes three hours and costs a hundred dollars is just seen as entertainment. Here, there are lots more interesting things to do and no one wants to waste time enjoying the elongated dining experience that city dwellers seem to enjoy. No need to entertain in restaurants either since, as no one spends their every waking minute working or commuting to work, people have time to clean and cook. After being born and raised in the south, I traveled a lot in my career. I once thought that Alabama and the south were just dumb. I thought that Gulf Shores had to be the worst beach area in the world. After having lived and worked in some of the world?s greatest places, I can say for sure that there is no place like Alabama and the south!

Having worked in Chicago, (One IBM Plaza) congratulations on finding your paradise. I had lost mine for a time.

How did you come across this area as a place for relocation? (IE moved for a job? Or found a job after moving?) Does the wife work? Not trying to pry too much, but it's a huge decision to just pick up and leave -- and even harder with wife and kids ...just wondering how you stumbled upon this gem.

QFT, considering that most of the GD insurance agencies here in FL jacked there home insurance rates through the roof (pun intended!) after all those hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast. Some people have seen a 100% increase!

I'm a building contractor, and there is no way I could buy the material to build that house for 33k. Think I could rent it out for a $100 a month if I baught it? Even if it rented for $50 a month I'd still be out less than my phone bill every month. God thats cheap....

hmmm, interesting, looking for a place for my mom to retire and can't afford even a studio here in SD (start at 215k in my neighborhood for under 400sq ft.)

How cold are the winters?

What size town is Dyer? We just sold our house in So. Cal. and are currently renting... we're seriously looking for a better place to raise our 4 children. Any idea what the school teachers make in the area (within 30 min drive)? And you say you have choice of 2 super walmarts... how far are they? That is the one thing I'd have a hard time with... it seems like with a family of 6, we are at walmart 3 times a week... always forget something.
