An article I read yesterday said that the hiker had taken the bear safety course which told him to keep a minimum safe distance and he still was stupid enough to get too close. I'd say Darwin was at play here.

We had some girls who moved into town a year or so ago who came up to visit the farm a couple of times. I was really taken aback when one of them asked me about the llamas, "do they talk?" These were girls in at least middle school, if not high school. I stammered for a moment, suppressing the urge to laugh, and answered them, "Yes, but usually not in front of people. Sometimes, the boy llama even sings love songs to the girls llamas at night." Hey, why should I tell them the truth and prevent someone else from also having a good laugh?
Heh, "Only when you rub their genitals."

Reminds me of when I lived in West Philly and had my Great Dane, never on a leash and always under voice control, which was legal, at least then, in Philly.

Once, I was being approached by a group of UofP coeds who looked kind of nervous, so I cheerily called out, "Don't worry, he only attacks virgins!"

They broke up laughing.

Bear had to be killed, so many pansies on the internet. I don't think more than 60% of ATOTers have ever been outside.

Hey, now. The west Nile is trying to take over the Mississippi. Heard it's humped over the Savannah. Isaac is now pounding his 300 mile girth up behind where Katrina has gone before.

Shit is crazy outside. Not safe at all.

Didn't. I'd kill it myself if it was an IMMINENT threat. This is not why it was killed though. It was killed for one of two reason or a combination of the two:

1. To preserve as much as possible of a carcass.
2. To expedite the retrieval of said carcass.

The issue here, or if I may, what is being weighed on the moral scale, is the emotions of humans versus the life of a bear.

A case is being made now that the bear became an imminent threat, and I disagree with that assertion. e.i. a circling bear is not a charging bear.

Da fuck? I could understand if the bear was in public terrorizing a neighborhood or something, but killing in its own backyard because of some dumbass?

Bear could have claimed Castle Doctrine

uh, this is always done. no one wants a maneater on the loose. The issue is that bears typically fear humans and try to avoid them at all costs. A bear that not only displays no fear for humans, but will likely now actively seek them as a source of food, is not a, um..."useful" bear.

It's a carnivore - WTF do you expect? It appeared to have killed him within a very close proximity of it's shelter, maybe the bear was also protecting it's territory. I can see if it'd gone after a few humans but just one? meh.
Nice armchair forestry, just curious but do you have any experience with this situation at all?

This is an extremely typical response for large predators who kill a human. Hell, even if a domesticated, caged, trained dog killed a human it'd be put down.

They shouldn't have killed the bear - it should have been moved...

Actually it is. The whole purpose of national and state parks is to preserve the environment for wild animals to prosper and prevail in their natural environment since humans have destroyed a lot of where they live.

That seems to be the case until some dumbass gets too close to the animals and fucks up the only place these animals have left to live. The bear should have been left be. A few tourists eaten here and there might make some of the idiots think a bit, then again some people are just too fucking stupid. Bear snacks anyone?

I don't think the bear would be put down for any other purpose. Everybody knows that it was the man who was stupid (RIP) enough to get that close to a fckin bear. Thanks to over-confidence, two unfortunate deaths.
