My experience using stuff like pellet and paintball guns on animals to try to scare them away is not positive. So I don't recommend it.

I don't think I would be able to tent out west.....

Black Bears scare me enough hehe. No way in hell I would be in a tent with Cougers/Grizzlies around.....I will pass.

I wouldn't be yelling at a grizzly. I'd get the fuck out as quietly and quickly as possible and I'd be hoping I had a big gun in case he charged. Sadly no Brown bears left in california though, so not something I have to worry about.

This not so scary.

This is oh crap I crapped myself.

Terrible advice. Bears are scavengers when hungry. They eat dead things.

The historical document does not lie! You play dead, the bear smells you, buries you, and you fall through the cliff as the bear packs down the dirt.

I thought playing dead only applies to Brown Bears, not Black Bears.

Black bears will not stop the attack if you play dead. You are suppose to stand your ground, make yourself big (or as a group)/yell and fight them off is possible

Sounds like an awesome story. Share it!

I mentioned the paintball thing because I've shot racoons before. I guess bears are slightly bigger than racoons and they might respond differently.

There's tons of stupid bear advice that floats around
1 - play dead
2 - run down hill
3 - climb a tree
4 - run away

Playing dead doesn't work because bears eat dead animals. Instead of scaring the bear away, this encourages the bear to get closer and assess the situation.
Running down hill is just stupid. Bears run down hills all the time. Thanksfully I've only heard 1 idiot suggest this.
Climbing a tree is stupid because bears climb trees much faster than humans.
Running away is stupid because bears are much faster than humans, and this tells the bear that you are prey. Animals naturally chase after things that run away.

A man in rural Minnesota wakes up one morning to find a bear on his roof.
So he looks in the yellow pages, and sure enough, there's an ad for "Up North Bear Removers."
He calls the number, and the bear remover says he'll be over in 30 minutes.

The bear remover arrives, and gets out of his van.
He's got a ladder, a baseball bat, a 12-gauge shotgun, and a mean old pit bulldog.

"What are you going to do?" the homeowner asks.

"I'm going to put this ladder up against the roof, then I'm going to go up there, and knock the bear off
The roof with this baseball bat. When the bear falls off the roof, the pit bull is trained to grab his testicles and not let go. The bear will then be subdued enough for me to put him in the cage in the back of the van."

He then hands the shotgun to the homeowner.

"What's the shotgun for?" asks the homeowner.

"If the bear knocks me off the roof, shoot the dog."

One of the AK pistols would be ideal, if the incredibly loud noise and muzzle flash don't scare it off 30 rounds of steel core 7.62x39 should give you a fighting chance.

The camping spot my friends and I use in Allegheny National Forest (and going back this year Jun 9-16 ), is being groomed for black bear and turkey.

We always take a shotgun, because if you ever saw a bear run full out, you'd realize trying to hit it in the eyes with pepper spray while it's moving 30MPH is both hard, and has zero stopping power.

But of course, how often are you being charged? Before that can happen, use the #1 tool to get rid of bears - firecrackers. In the unlikely event a black bear will come toward you, in the more unlikely event that you even see one, a pack of firecrackers will scare them off easily.

The black bears there are cuddly. Your best defense is a good offense: hugging.

I wouldn't worry about bears, I've camped around those areas before. If you see a bear just walk away. They aren't prone to attacking people.

Black bears are not scary unless you happen to corner one or you get between a mother and her cubs. I have chased them away plenty of times. Seriously yelling works like a charm. As for food just don't keep it in your tent or car. If they fuck with your cooler or your grill oh well. Go get some more food. If you ever camp in Yosemite they literally run right through your camp at night a few feet from your tent. The rangers are up all night chasing them away from garbage cans and all they use is a loud speaker yelling "Get out of here bear!" over and over. Not very conducive to sleeping though.

As for all these people saying you need a gun, you guys are fucking pussys. Seriously, gigantic pussies.

Tell him that. Or my step-dad. Black bear attacks have been on the rise. There was a really bad scene at a camp ground a few years ago, someplace in the Midwest I think several people got mauled, I think one or two died. Dealing with bears who have cushy lives raiding dumpsters is one thing, running into a older desperate male or pissed off mother off in the bush away from civilization is a completely different matter.

Bears can be scared off 98% of the time, sure, but I don't think anyone is a pussy for carrying in bear country. You can believe that if you want, but I think it makes you sound like a cavalier asshole. I've driven off bears with shouting and thrown fruit before, but have also had one do a slow charge, complete with snarls and raised hackles. I was on a logging road and about 30ft from my truck, so I just left.

I don't understand the "nature won't fuck with me if I don't fuck with it" mentality at all, there are loads of stories of people minding their own business and getting attacked. Not just by bears either.

I've heard that too, but my step dad played dead and his black bear eventually left the scene.

That is definitely what you do if a puma jumps you though. Go cornered rat on his ass, and don't stop.
