Tell him that. Or my step-dad. Black bear attacks have been on the rise. There was a really bad scene at a camp ground a few years ago, someplace in the Midwest I think several people got mauled, I think one or two died. Dealing with bears who have cushy lives raiding dumpsters is one thing, running into a older desperate male or pissed off mother off in the bush away from civilization is a completely different matter.

Bears can be scared off 98% of the time, sure, but I don't think anyone is a pussy for carrying in bear country. You can believe that if you want, but I think it makes you sound like a cavalier asshole. I've driven off bears with shouting and thrown fruit before, but have also had one do a slow charge, complete with snarls and raised hackles. I was on a logging road and about 30ft from my truck, so I just left.

I don't understand the "nature won't fuck with me if I don't fuck with it" mentality at all, there are loads of stories of people minding their own business and getting attacked. Not just by bears either.

Yep

Better safe than sorry.

I think Bear Spray/Horn and few knifes will do the trick. I will make a fuckin spear to to hike with too!

The argument I was making is that if you aren't comfortable being in their backyard then don't go there. I don't approve of spear fishing sharks, shooting bears, etc. If you aren't comfortable in another apex predator's territory then get out.

The comment about 9mm is stupid.
Few 147gr Hollow Point rounds will kill anything (eventually).

I would advise against carrying anything below a 10mm auto for bears, you'll most likely just piss it off.

Here's my bear protection:

Add some Buffalo Bore heavy 44MAG +P+ 340-grain hard cast LFN ammo (https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=54) and it should stop most bears in North America.

Young guy on his first trip to Alaska notices the custom large frame .44 magnum his guide is carrying. Very impressive weapon: Beautiful burl wood handles, stainless steel for weather resistance, and as he looked closer, the guy notices that every corner and edge on the firearm had been expertly shaped and rounded off. Even the front sight had been removed. Deeply awed of this fine handgun, he asked:

"You carry that for protection?"

- "Yep"

"From Bears, I bet"

- ....

"By the way - why's it all rounded off, and the sight removed?? You're such a good shot, you don't need to aim??", he grinned

- "Nope. Hurts less when the bear shoves it up your ass"

I've never heard of a bear breaking into a car. That's where they tell us to put our food at the parks here. Unless your bears are all corrupted and live on human food all the time... I guess.

Black bears are not scary unless you happen to corner one or you get between a mother and her cubs. I have chased them away plenty of times. Seriously yelling works like a charm. As for food just don't keep it in your tent or car.

This, and the suggestion to make a lot of noise. One solution often recommended for storing food is to hang it from a rope strung between two trees. Don't limit your thinking to just food, I've heard of bears going after toothpaste and soap if they can smell it.

And be careful when cooking and eating. If you fry up some bacon and wipe your hands on your clothing, well, expect a visitor in your tent.

Having respect for something bigger and badder than you'll ever be is not being a pussy. Its being smart and taking precautions to stay living.

Let's get something straight. These are probably black bears (small), they are certainly not kodiak, and so a 9mm would do quite a number, but firearms won't be needed in virtually all cases. Most bears will be content enough to let you walk off unless they do it first themselves.

I don't know what is best for black bears, but if you want to make noise an air horn will make tons on demand for you.

There is no other place to put food other than the car. I've been doing that for years (along with a grill).

Hanging it on a tree is not an option as it has to be cooled.

This is a really bad idea. A bear will tear your car apart if he thinks there is food inside it. They also generally recognize a cooler as a source of food.

Ohh yea? And leaving it out in the open is a better idea?

What choices do I have?

I don't care if the bear rips up my car......

Rope + tree maybe.

2 stout trees about 20 feet apart.

Plan to string a rope between them about 10-15 ft off the ground.

At the halfway point of the main rope tie off your food/toiletries (if using them)
Haul the first rope taunt to the 15ft mark.
This will get the food out of the reach of any bear.
Tie off the loose end of the rope to something.

Do not try to cover the food or tie it directly to a branch for your convenience. The bear can easily replicate what you have done and they are stronger.
If stored in a container; they will rip it open or drag it.

As others have stated, a healthy bear will leave you alone as long as food or cubs are not in the picture.
Anything but a Kodiak, Polar or Humpback (Grizzly) will shy away from you with noise. These three will investigate; unless you are an expert shot; a couple of high power slugs will piss them off and you will become their next meal.

Now the Kodiak will gladly share it's buffet with you as long as you do not seem to be poaching.
