Nice and small, but I just couldn't live with only one PCI slot. I have seen some very small micro-ATX cases and many of these boards will have three PCI slots plus an AGP. This is the route I would go. And like someone just above me was saying, you could build a sweet system for much cheaper than the Shuttle box. The whole mini-pc barebone systems are incredibly overpriced, considering you usually just get the box and the mainboard.

That's right. Barebone used to mean that you get a floppy drive and CD-ROM along with the case and motherboard. But now, those cube boxes don't even come with them.

I agree, I need a challenge, After slapping a system together and tweaking it I slide it aside and start looking for new parts for a new challenge. Easy to get bored if everything goes too smoothly.

The problem is they have all those PCI slots, but it's incredibly hard to find low profile PCI bracket cards...believe me, I know...I built and am now using an MSI 6231. I had to "customize" an ATI TV Wonder VE using a "blank" bracket that came with the MSI...it was the only low profile TV tuner card I found...and even then it only comes with a full size bracket. Although I do see the latest MSI models use a PCI riser to give you 2 full size slots. If I was building the machine today, that's the only way to go.

I don't know anything about the MSI 6231, but a legitimate MicroATX case will use standard size PCI and AGP cards. The cases are smaller, so oversize cards might not fit, but even these will usually work. If the MSI 6231 has a riser card, it is probably an LPX or some other kind of board, not MATX. LPX usually come in ready made computers. If you were going to put together your own small computer, MATX if the form factor most people on a budget would choose.

I dont think the original case on this post is that bad.
here is a better shot of it

link

Also from what i can see, it takes a regular size atx board, which in the long run is cheaper.

imo its not bad. just wish I could tell if it takes regular size pci and agp cards

If it takes full size ATX or MATX boards, it will take normal size PCI and AGP cards. Very few mainboards require non-standard PCI card sizes. These are usually Flex, LPX or some other odd configuration. If you are building your own computer, chances are you won't be using one of these wierd configurations.

It look like this case only takes MicroATX and Low Profile PCI/AGP.

It has the dimension of 41cm x 32cm x 10cm = 16.1in x 12.6in x 3.9 in which is pretty similar to Aopen H340 MicroATX case (15.71in x 12.76in x 3.74in). Aopen case only takes MicroATX or smaller and Low Profile cards. Standard size PCI/AGP card bracket itself is 4.75 in high, so there is no way it fits. Also, Fullsize ATX has the width of 12in and the case is only 12.6in wide so there is no way that it goes in the case.

LEt me clear this up. My co worker got this case yesterday. It is a low prfile case that only accepts half height cards. It is quite small. He put in a ASUS P4P800-VM mcroATX board in it. (with p4 3.06). It runs it just fine!! Even I was shocked especially with the low watts. He also purchased the add on card. I may end up buying one myself. But of course I need money

EDIT: I too thought it would be ugly, but actually since it was so small it made it look kind of cute - LOL But I didn't think it looked that bad in the first place.

Now thats a nice looking case.

I don't care how small the case, the fact that it only accepts half height cards is a total deal breaker.

Newegg MATX mini tower

Here are a couple of InWin microATX cases that look OK and should take normal cards. They are fairly small, smaller than a normal audio receiver, so if you lay on it's side, it would probably fit just fine in your AV cabinet. The blue one is $44 with shipping.

i agree, very ugly. It looks like it's 10 years old, but if that is what you are going for, it's great..

I just went to a computer show to pick up some cables and other little stuff and saw the case being sold there. It's not that ugly. It's pretty decent. It has similar look to this Inwin case, but smaller.

It looked that you would probably need to order the front IO connection; otehrwise, you would just have holes when you open the small door.

The case you pointed out is just as wide as a regular atx case. But shorter. Defeats the purpose in my opinion of a microatx board. I went ahead and ordered the "beautiful case" (LOL) and the front USB card. This will fit perfectly in my rack.

This case wouldn't look all that bad if it were painted, maybe black appliance paint which seems to hold up better on plastic bezels, etc. It's square face makes it look older but most rack components ARE sharply-cornered boxes still.
