So I was doing some research and basically read that the United States and Canada have two of the longest pathways to becoming a doctor in the whole world.

In India though, you can become a doctor in 5 years flat.

If one were to go through Med school in India and become a doctor, can they come back to America, get certified, and start practicing?

Just curious, really.

It is the standard to get your MD in 4 years in the U.S. and Canada, however it will take a varying amount of time on top of that to complete your residency.

Same thing applies to the American University of Antigua.

I think you would have to come back and do a residency here to practice in the US anyways, not to mention you're less competitive and less desirable as an applicant.

Stick with the tried and true

No, they'd have to take USMLE 1,2, and 3, then apply and get into a residency. And then it's at least 3 years before being able to practice, depending on the residency.

Some of my friends did their med school in Australia and they can't practice medicine here with out rewrite the exams. My sister father in-law did his med school in England and he practice med here in Canada with out any extra requirement/s.

Looks like you still have to do residency, yes.

Still..a good bit shorter though right? 3.5-4 years to get through pre-med + med school it looks like.

I heard you can do the same in India/Nepal as well.

I'm an accounting major, but envy doctors spending 4 years in Antigua, would be a nice vacation.

The vast majority of FMG end up making 80k/yr doing family practice in bumbletucky, totally not worth it.

Not to mention you wont be considered competitive for any residency by major universities or hospitals. (The UC system puts you at the bottom of the list regardless of your USMLE scores, GPA whatever)

The vast majority of people who say they know someone who went to FMGs and ended up making 2 mil a year as a plastic surgeon are either full of shit, or part of the .0000000000001% that somehow beat the odds.

That bad eh? I would hate to be in Family Practice forever. Only field that ever caught my attention was Neurology.

Though for the cheaper rates for the med school, it's definitely cost effective.

Hmm...interesting stuff you guys have brought up.

The American University of Antigua (AUA) was founded by New York lawyer Neal S. Simon, who formerly served as president of Ross University. AUA is listed in FAIMER's International Medical Education Directory as having started instruction in 2004.[1] The New York State Department of Education has approved American University of Antigua for the purposes of allowing its students to complete more than 12 weeks of clinical training in that state.[2] AUA has submitted its application to the state of California to gain institution approval and is awaiting notification for the next steps required to continue the process.[3]. In August 2009 AUA announced a partnership with San Juan Bautista School of Medicine which allows AUA students to become visiting students at SJBSOM and participate in clinical clerkship training. This is the first partnership between a Caribbean medical school and a US-accredited medical school.[4]

Pre-medical coursework leading to an AAS or BSc degree may be completed via the American International College of Arts & Sciences - Antigua, a school within the AUA system.

AUA also has a School of Nursing where accepted students can gain auto-entry into the Lehman College of Nursing in New York upon successful completion of the ASN program on the island of Antigua and passage of the NCLEX.

Additionally, AUA is due to open up the doors of a new College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences via a partnership with Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech.

Wiki info, just for anyone who is reading and interested.

Cost effective if you want to work yourself to death for 4 years, then get paid barely anything for another 4, then get paid a little more than nothing from then on. Don't forget to add on malpractice insurance, office overhead, etc

Why not just open your own practice?

Also if you work in a hospital, would you really be making less than all the other doctors? After residency and proving yourself with some experience isn't it all the same?

Looks like one of their partner universities is the #1 Private Medical School in India.

6 years is not a long path.
Go to a school that has the 2+4 yr program.

If one goes to India, they'll have to take 1 year off or more to do Step 1,2, and 3.
You still have to do residency as well.

Only if they work in California or in academic medicine. It pays double that in the midwest; plus the cost of living is a lot less.

No hospital/residency worth a damn is going to accept a FMG when theyve got load of qualified US applicants. Theyd take a DO before a foreign grad. We get a few apps a year from FMG for residency slots, they go straight into the garbage.

I paid $10k/yr for my med school, UC San Francisco. Best deal in the country by far.

That most have been decades ago.
How old are you, 55-60?

My aunt always recants about how school used to be $200-250/semester when she did undergrad.

Graduated in 2000. UC schools used to be dirt cheap for residents.
