Ordered one of these a few days ago and just received it today. After coming across this thread haven't really made up my mind if I will even unbox it yet, although I have seen both good/bad reviews of said product.
I do think this will be an upgrade over my "Green" model though.

I can certainly say they have improved,my cousin has a 2009 series 640gb Blue that seeks to 12.9ms but outside of that it benches 101mbps average read, burst is about 154 while this one actually just did 15.8ms,146mbps average and 202 burst.

Seeks higher sure but this thing is much more quiet then that old 640gb,i figured this is a typical upgrade for someone.

This is drive he has and what i think is a typical drive that would need a upgrade today

As the title suggests,iv'e been rolling mostly with ssds for a while outside of the recent addition of a free 2005 80gb Seagate that seriously needs to be replaced cause between its 54mbps max transfer speed and its small size it needs a proper replacement

Between Origin and Steam collecting more and more games and me having to reinstall/redownload,uninstall and move between my 260gb combined space i think a proper 1tb drive should solve all those problems immediately.

Looking at this drive here

Been about 3 years since i bought a mechanical, last one was a Seagate 1tb that crashed.I recall the Black Drives from WD being apparently being the best for game storage,is this still holding true today?

If this is for a game directory, and we're talking a 1TB I'd just get the WD Blue. If the $25 dollar difference isn't a big deal and you like the confort of a 5 year warranty then go with the WD black.
I have a bunch of WD black drives ranging from 500GB to 3TB, some purchased back in 2008.
I fully expect that they will all be working flawlessly when I toss them in the trash years from now.
I also have a few Blues. I've had to replace a few over the years but the ones replaced were all being used as primary drives, not storage so I don't want to judge them as storage drives.

Personally, I'd rather pony up for a big ole SSD and keep my installs to a minimum but if I had to pick 1TB HDD specifically for a Steam\Origin\Uplay directory I'd grab a Blue on sale and be done with it.

If we were talking a bigger drive (2TB plus) with a broader usage pattern I'd lean toward a black drive

Was quite nice to put all my games on my rig with this new drive,330gb in total with 115 on my ssd. Got about 715gb free which is so nice as i intend on buying a backlog of 2014 games.

Got 22gb free on the ssd as well, any patches for my main 3 games which are on there and any small programs have plenty of room as well.
