If you have lotso cash, look at a Toshiba Tecra 8100. They come all the way up to 750Mhz, up to 256MB RAM, 14.1" screen, up to 20GB hard drives, DVD. Toshiba systems tend to be a bit more expensive than everybody else, but they also get fixed the fastest if they break.

What kind of money were you looking to put out, and what kind of spec's were you looking at?

Dell has the Inspirion 5000e with the option for the ATI Rage Mobility 128 16MB graphics and 15" UXGA screen. I recommend buying the smallest amount of RAM possible and buying the rest from someone else, as Dell charges way too much for RAM. It can hold up to 512MB RAM and the processor goes up to 750MHz.
You can get up to 32GB HD on it too.
I bought one of these and I recommend you at least look into it. I am really happy with my purchse. I can actually play 3D games on it pretty well because of the graphics chipset.

I fix computers in one of my jobs and as a result I deal with tons of laptops.

I really don't like the mouse on toshibas at all, the ones I play with at work are really annoying to work with. Dell Latitudes are amazing laptops in my book, I love dealing with them. I don't like the feel of the Dell Inspirons, they are very large. The IBM's are a little clunky in my book. Sony laptops are OK to me. I would deal with Dell b/c of the excellent tech support and nice feel of the small but powerful latitudes.

i called up and asked the sales person for a quote on a latitude cs pIII 500mhz 13.3 TFT XGA display, 128mb sdram, 12gb hd, xircom ethernet card, xircom modem card, 24x modular cd-rom, with a 3yr warranty its $2,119 with 150 promotion untill sep 30th so it comes to $1,969 sweeeet!

i configured the same notebook new and the total was $2,885, so thats a phat savings of $916 bucks not a bad deal

I will echo Viper's statements about the Solo 9300. I got one in July, and it has been perfectly awesome in every respect. I just finished a trip to the Pacific Northwest and it was totally reliable. The 15.7 inch screen is the same size as a 17-inch CRT monitor . . . and the native resolution is 1260 x 1024. Digital imagery and DVD movies are outta sight. Also, it has a LS-120 drive in place of the useless floppy drive.

The modem performed very well using iPass local connections everywhere I went. It comes loaded with 98SE, and a free ME upgrade is coming as soon as Gateway makes sure it meets all their checks.

I can't say if Gateway tech support is any good or not . . . I have never needed it. In nearly three months of use, it has never frozen or blue screened me.

I am sorry but you can't possibly beat the Ultra XGA screen on Dell's Inspirion 5000e. It can go up to 1600x1200!

The largest laptop hard drive in existance right now is a 32GB from IBM, which, by the way, you can get on the 5000e.

I don't like Dell too much either but, hey, you have to give credit where credit is due.

Also, Astroview, the 5000e is rather thin, but I agree it is pretty wide. Thats what you get with a 15" or larger screen. Anyway it doesn't matter how bulky a laptop is when you are carrying it in its case.
