Beeping/No POST

Hey all,

I recently started building yet another computer. I purchased a Chaintech motherboard (a budget solution that had some nice reviews on Newegg) and an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ CPU. I've built plenty of computers, but have never run across this.

I was going through my usual routine of installation. I test each and every component one at a time as I add them. I added the CPU, then memory, and graphics card outside of the case and it all worked. I put it all in the case and it still worked. I added a network card and changed the FSB jumper to 133 and the computer still booted fine. After this, I went to swap out hard drives (new hard drive for my computer, older hard drive into the new computer). I plugged the IDE devices in and tried to power on the computer.

However, the computer won't get to POST anymore. Instead, it just beeps...over and over and over again. About a second long beep followed by about two seconds of off, and then repeat. I've gone back to square one and the computer still does the same thing. I've tried with a PCI graphics card (first thing that jumped into my mind was somehow the video wasn't working).

If any of you have any suggestions, I'd be eternally grateful!

Thanks for your time!

There weren't any connections to be faulty. I removed everything but the CPU and memory.

I did, however, find out the problem in a way. I eventually stumbled across the beep code key that I needed (after a long while searching through Award Bios, and then the Phoenix website). Repeating beeps means something with the memory. I decided to try and reseat the memory yet again, but that didn't help.

It wasn't until I switched the memory to the other slot that the computer started working again. I went through and put everything back in the case with no problems. I connected all IDE devices and booted to the Windows XP install on the hard drive I ganked from another computer (though it crashed because of all the new hardware). I shut the computer down because I wanted to remove the zip drive (I was just testing to see if BIOS recognized it). In order to do this, I had to remove the memory.

I pulled the drive out, replaced the memory, and now I am back to where I started. I am getting the repetitive beeps again. Obviously, it's a memory problem again.

What would be causing this? I tried reseating the memory, putting it into slot 1 again, and cursing at it, but nothing works.

I don't think I could be anymore confused.
